Perfect for diaper bag

This book is perfect for the diaper bag! It's small, and my 13-month old can enjoy it whether or not anyone is available to read it to her. It has kept her entertained through many restaurant mealtimes and car rides. You'll be amazed how many words your child knows when you ask her to point to specific pictures throughout the book!

Simple books are the best

"First 100 Words" by Roger Priddy was bought as a gift for my sons’s first birthday and it is the perfect book for a one year old. It is quite a basic book and the sort of board book most children will have at some stage in their life. It definitely deserves mention, as my son chooses it from his library nearly every day.

Previous reviews have indicated some confusion over the book size. This version of the book is pretty small (it's 5 x 6 inches; an over-sized ABC/colors version can be found here), and it can withstand rough little hands as it is a board book.

Each brightly colored page shows various photographs alongside the corresponding word. I like that it uses photographs instead of illustrations (animals wearing clothes, etc.). The pages are split into themes of things your LO will probably recognize from everyday life, such as clothes, food, things that go and so on.

My son has had this book for a couple of months now and it’s been a huge hit with him. He will sit on the floor and look through it himself. Together, we look at the pages and I point to each picture and say the word. I’ve started him with some Tiny Tutor videos to supplement our lessons while I do chores around the house. We do this most days and the repetition seems to be paying off, as he seems to recognize a new thing in the book every day.

Although rather basic on the face of it, I am really delighted with this book and wish we’d had it sooner. It is selling for under $5 on Amazon which I think is a real bargain. I’ve noticed there are some similar titles, such as First 100 Animals and First 100 Numbers Colors Shapes. I will be looking to purchase these in the future too. It seems the simple things really are the best sometimes.

Best book for toddlers at every learning stage!

Bought this book for my 1 year old as she began to show an interest in looking at books herself. It is her favorite! Not only is the outside cover soft, but the pages inside are study boards. The book itself is small, perfect size for a toddler with small hands. She can carry it around and turn each page on her own. Every two pages has a theme, such as "Outside" or "Bath" or "Toys", every word has its own colorful square and photo. This is a great tool for a young toddler who is beginning to learn how to say the names of everyday objects or activities. My daughter and I will sit down and I will point to each object and say the word, she will try and repeat the sound. Sometimes I will say "show me where the cat is" or "can you point to the airplane" and she loves finding the objects on the page! I loved this book so much we bought the "first 100 animals" also. Worth every penny and more!

About the Author
Vivek Ahuja is the author of several historical articles on the Indo-China border and is contributor to Force Magazine in India. He has written extensively about the historical underpinnings of the Sino-Indian border dispute, the Sino-Indian border war of 1962 and its impact on India and China. He is also author of technical articles on the mathematical modeling and simulations of combat systems, land-warfare and wartime logistics. He received his Doctorate from Auburn University and currently resides in Austin, Texas in the USA.

Filling a much needed gap in the genre of good writing on military scenarios in S.Asia

Move over Clancy, Hawksley,Bahl. Finally there is a well researched and realistic fiction on conflict in Asia.

For fans of military fiction, this book is an eye-opener. Most books either cover wars from a geopolitical level or at an in depth level at the denomination of a platoon. Where Ahuja differentiates himself is in being able to scope in to action at grassroots level (you can only wonder at the level of research done in his description of unit level tactics and weapon systems) to creating a frame for the reader to understand the macro level context.

Definitely a worthy read for people who have an in-depth interest in S.Asia & China.

A great book

I bought this book a couple of weeks back. Did not put it down until I finished it. It took me 4 days to complete the book.
For those of you who haven't read it yet, this book is about a plausible future war scenario between Bharat and China with pakistan thrown in a bit. It has a very detailed storyline that focuses a lot on land battle between Bharat's Army and the PLA/PLAAF. The author has an amazing knowledge of himalayan region that he uses to the hilt.
Here are the negative: firstly, there were few spelling mistakes. Secondly, the scenario loses an aspect of realism because the author did not focus on naval warfare to the extent that he dealt with the land warfare/ air warfare. Also, in some of the battles, Bharat's side seem to have access to warfare systems like the Pinaka batteries, but for whatever reason the author doesn't provide the same relief to the PLA/PLAAF.

But, overall I loved it. Authors from Bharat are certainly coming of age...

Excellent futuristic but grounded millitary fiction of an Indo-Chinese conflict

Fans of millitary fiction, tired of cold war like scenarios or small scale engagements can now rejoice. Here is a very realistic millitary scenario depicting a potential Indo-Chinese conflict and how it may actually end up. The surprise is in how it may end up and why 1962 was a flash in pan when the Indian leadership failed its people.

Imagine a brutal tank battle in Ladakh at 16,000 ft (the highest mountain on mainland US is @20,000 ft) or a battle in the passes of Bhutan or a vicious air battle where the Mig 29s and Su 30 are pitted against S-27s and J-8s. This novel covers it vividly. A cat and mouse game to punch holes in the S-300 radar defence, yes that is covered to. Use of transport aircrafts, refuellers, AWACS, cruise missiles and both tactical and strategic missiles are also covered. This is present technologies which the Asian giants currently possess. An operational supersonic cruise missile or near operational ALCM is pitted against a sophisticated radar coverage.

In this novel, the auther Vivek weaves a compelling story around the tools of war and how humans use it. The novel is fast paced and sucks you into reading further, due to a very good story built around actual data points. It has its elements of humour as well, sample this:

" ... What cause do we have for mobilizing these Divisions?" the PM said.

Chakri shared a look at Yadav in silence and then sighed where he sat in silence.

"Cause? How about defending our borders? Does that sound like a good enough cause, you idiot?"

Yadav said calmly:

"Defending our borders, sir. That's a just enough cause, isn't it?"

Brilliant! For the followers in news about the recent happenings in India, where the pacifist PM is being pilloried for beheadings of Indian soldiers at the border, the above hits home.

It appears that this novel has been in making for a while so all the more credit to the author for his perserverance and making it thorugh his first publication. It does not appear that this is his first fiction.

What could have been better? The prologue. The novel jumps directly into the conflict and keeps our attention, however a build up on the current Tibetan occupation, the ongoing tibetan sacrfices, the Indo-Chinese conflict rooted in Mao's foolhardiness and Kissinger's acquiescence etc should have been added for the lay person. Further, an epilogue giving the topography of the McMohan line and some details with photos of the arms like the Brahmos supersonic cruise missile and the advanced Su 30 MKI and Su 27 could have been added.

Again for a novel that lays down the use of arms and how they fare when pitted against each other, depicting a realistic scenario for a lay person this achieves a lot. A very complex and advanced mathematical modelling over a table top war fare exercise is deftly hidden by the author here. It does steer clear of international politics and that is a good thing.

Overall, every person/journalist interested in millitary history and modern conflicts in the Indian subcontinent should read this. This novel ensures why simple juxtapositions like Pakistani missiles are tall fair and hence more advanced than short and stubby Indian missiles are dumb. Or why the mere possession in numbers of Su 27s by the Chinese will make them masters of the aerospace is a far fetched thought.

The Shiva Sutra was revealed to Vasugupta by Shiva in order to counter the effects of dualism. This anonymous writer also serves as a bridge between Ksemaraja's and Bhaskara's commentaries, drawing from both. The commentary on each sutra is thus in three layers. Bhaskara's commentary is first, followed by the anonymous commentary, after which Dyczkowski adds his own exposition and compares Bhaskara and Ksemaraja.
Ksemaraja's commentary, the Vimarsini, has been translated by Jaideva Singh and published by SUNY Press under the title Siva Sutra.

Mark S. G. Dyczkowski took his first degree at Banaras Hindu University and then his doctorate at Oxford. He is presently associated with Sampurnananda Sanskrit University in Varanasi. He is the author of The Doctrine of Vibration: An Analysis of the Doctrines and Practices of Kashmir Shaivism; The Canon of the Saivagama and the Kubjika: Tantras of the Western Kaula Tradition; and The Stanzas on Vibration: The Spanda Karika with Four Commentaries.

Great Translation and Commentary

The philosophy of Kashmir Shaivism was born in the 9th century when Lord Shiva revealed the 77 aphorisms which have come to constitute the Shiva Sutras to the sage, Vasugupta in a dream. Sri Vasugupta was then instructed to seek out a specific rock on Mahadev Mountain. When Vasugupta struck the rock, it is said to have turned over, revealing the Shiva Sutras inscribed upon the rock. The rock, called Shankaropala, is still located at the original site, although the aphorisms can no longer be found inscribed there.

The book "Aphorisms of Shiva" by Mark Dyczkowski is a translation of the Shiva Sutras with a commentary from Bhaskara, an early sage of Kashmir Shaivism hailing from the lineage of Sage Vasugupta himself. It also features another anonymous commentary. Many generations removed from Vasugupta, a brilliant Master from this same lineage, named Abhinivagupta, wrote the master work of Kashmir Shaivism, the Tantraloka. In a monumental feat of scholarship and penetrating insight, Abhinavagupta rendered the works of these early proponents of Kashmir Shaivism into a cohesive whole which included all the eminent Tantric traditions of the time and region. Abhinava's foremost disciple, Kshemaraja went on to write a commentary on the Shiva Sutras, following the inclusive style of his Guru, that has been widely translated in our own era. In his "Aphorisms of Shiva", Professor Dyczkowski additionally compares the commentary representative of the early stream of Kashmiri Shaivite teaching to that of the later "Trika" system first expounded by Abhinava and furthered by Kshemaraja.

While it isn't the most easily-understood of philosophical pursuits, it's depth is immeasurable and its rewards are bountiful. Studied diligently, especially in conjunction with a spiritual practice and under the direction of a teacher who can help illumine the experience which the tradition points to, the "Shiva Sutras" can help uncover the most vast of treasures. He has been at various times a musician, commercial artist, book designer, sailor, painter of meticulous watercolor portraits of historical vessels, shipbuilder, nautical technician, historian, marine architect, and even, briefly, a lieutenant-commander of the Guatemalan Navy. His story includes shipwrecks, natural disasters, desperate escapes, glorious failures, but always the assumption that any person’s life is an unscripted adventure demanding unquestionable expertise. Combining mechanics and vision, Melbourne Smith shattered the amnesia of progress and reawakened the world to the great history of towering masts, fast hulls, shining sprawls of canvas, and extreme risk on the high seas.

I have always had an interest in sailing, especially in the era of the clipper ships, and have read a great many nautical themed books. However, biographies have not always been my first choice but once into the first chapter I was hooked. I felt like I was reading a mystery and could not put it down. It is such an American story, of dreams and the courage to pursue those dreams. Melbourne Smith is a rare individual, and we are shown how he grew up to be a dedicated expert at preserving history by designing, building, and actually sailing those ships of a bygone era, an era that saw the birth of America. The fact is, Melbourne Smith's story is much more than a biography, it is a fact filled book, a reference, about the grand sailing ships of old. This is a well written book on an exciting and interesting topic. I knew nothing about sailing ships and I found this informative. The author is very skilled with words, a word meister. This is a great book and I highly recommend it.
