Wherever she went, she inflamed the desire of cities, states, and countries to reclaim their own nautical heritage—a heritage that had been largely forgotten in civilization’s rush toward the industrial technologies of steam, oil, and iron. Melbourne Smith made this happen. Melbourne is a self-invented human phenomenon with a mind equal parts mechanical exactitude and reckless enthusiasm. In youth he was an apprentice sign-maker and hyperactive mist from a drab city on the shore of Lake Ontario. He has been at various times a musician, commercial artist, book designer, sailor, painter of meticulous watercolor portraits of historical vessels, shipbuilder, nautical technician, historian, marine architect, and even, briefly, a lieutenant-commander of the Guatemalan Navy. His story includes shipwrecks, natural disasters, desperate escapes, glorious failures, but always the assumption that any person’s life is an unscripted adventure demanding unquestionable expertise. Combining mechanics and vision, Melbourne Smith shattered the amnesia of progress and reawakened the world to the great history of towering masts, fast hulls, shining sprawls of canvas, and extreme risk on the high seas.

and have read a great many nautical themed books

I have always had an interest in sailing, especially in the era of the clipper ships, and have read a great many nautical themed books. However, biographies have not always been my first choice but once into the first chapter I was hooked. I felt like I was reading a mystery and could not put it down. It is such an American story, of dreams and the courage to pursue those dreams. Melbourne Smith is a rare individual, and we are shown how he grew up to be a dedicated expert at preserving history by designing, building, and actually sailing those ships of a bygone era, an era that saw the birth of America. The fact is, Melbourne Smith's story is much more than a biography, it is a fact filled book, a reference, about the grand sailing ships of old. A life story truly better than most fiction, weaving together disparate twists and turns as Melbourne becomes the premier modern proponent of design, construction, and seamanship, plucked from the golden age of sail. Paul Wood creates a great read! pete hendricks, 65 years a sailor.

Loved this book

This is a well written book on an exciting and interesting topic. I knew nothing about sailing ships and I found this informative. The author is very skilled with words, a word meister. This is a great book and I highly recommend it.
