Uncluttered, clear and concise

I am a retired chemist who teaches math to homeschooled students. Early in my career I was also a math teacher so I'm fortunate to be able to see how the approach to math has changed over the years. Jacob's book is clear and concise with an enormous number of problems after each lesson. I personally believe math is learned by doing problems. It is the constant application of concepts in solving problems that enables understanding to take place; the problems in Jacob's book reinforce the postulates and theorems by applying them in different situations. The problems are also practical, amusing and interesting which certainly helps to engage students.

The layout of the book is very consistent and well organized developing a pattern which makes it easy to thumb backwards to find previous information. Consistency is important in the learning process.

I think many textbooks today make the mistake of trying to sell the subject to the student with glitz and graphics. I believe this makes those books distracting and confusing. Jacob's approach is to state a few postulates or theorems clearly with a few examples. The problem sets demonstrate their use exhaustively.

I typically assign 150 problems to my students a week. This takes about 45-60 minutes a day. We typically go over the answers and discuss the next topic very briefly. Even if the number of assigned problems is cut in half, the arrangement of the problem sets enables competency to be attained. Of course in the world of today where homework is a thing of the past, many educators believe students need to be seduced with fluff but fluff doesn't drive concepts home. Practice makes perfect still works for me. It is sad to see how other countries have surpassed us by adhering to principals of hard work as hard work will almost always guarantee success.

My only complaint about the book is the slight inconsistency in stating definitions, postulates and theorems. When virtually every geometry text including Jacob's belabors conditional statements, I believe every theorem, etc. should be stated explicitly as a conditional statement. I restate them when they stray and have students consider the converse. I find students naturally restate the theorems more casually anyway.

A good source for high school geometry problems.

The third edition of Harold Jacobs' geometry text is an engaging, clearly written, and carefully developed introduction to high school geometry that contains many fascinating problems. As is the case in his excellent algebra text Elementary Algebra, Jacobs finds intriguing ways to introduce and explain each concept. The problems, many of which Jacobs culled from the numerous sources that he cites in his footnotes, are well-chosen. They reinforce the concepts taught in the text by placing the ideas in interesting real-life contexts or puzzles, and they also introduce new ideas. What the book lacks are problems in which the reader gets to practice writing proofs. Instead, almost all the proofs in the exercises are ones in which Jacobs provides the statements and asks the reader to provide the reasons. Consequently, this text is not useful if you want to learn how to write your own proofs.

Jacobs begins the text with a discussion of inductive reasoning and its limitations. He uses this discussion to stress the importance of deductive reasoning and proof before introducing Euclid's postulates. Jacobs covers lines and angles, congruence, inequalities, parallel lines, quadrilaterals, and transformations of the plane before a midterm review. Then he covers area, similarity, right triangle trigonometry, circles, concurrence theorems, regular polygons in relation to the circle, geometric solids, and non-Euclidean geometries before concluding with a final review. Each chapter contains a summary and a chapter review in addition to the problem sets at the end of each section.

Jacobs carefully develops the material, proving each result except in the more intuitive discussions in the chapters on transformations, solids, and non-Euclidean geometries. I found the chapter on concurrence theorems particularly fascinating.

The book contains a glossary, a list of formulas, and a list of postulates and theorems, making it useful as a reference. However, concepts discussed only in the problems are not included in these lists. There are answers to a few of the problems in the back of the text, but not enough of them to be useful if you want to check your answers systematically.

I recommend this book as a supplement rather than a text because it contains many intriguing problems but does not teach the reader how to write proofs. Those students who want to learn how to write proofs should consult the rigorous text Geometry by Edwin E. Moise and Floyd L. Downs, Jr.

He also currently serves on the editorial boards of six professional economics and finance journals. Professor Berger was Senior Economist from 1989 to 2008 and Economist from 1982-1989 at the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. John O. S. Wilson is Professor of Banking and Finance and Director for the Centre for Responsible Banking and Finance at the University of St Andrews, Scotland. He is Associate Editor to the British Accounting Review, European Journal of Finance and the Journal of Money Credit and Banking and sits on the editorial boards of a number of journals including the Journal of Business Finance and Accounting and the Journal of Financial Economic Policy. however this was a complete waste of money

I bought this e-book as I'm doing a banking finance paper at uni, however this was a complete waste of money. Firstly, e-book version should be a lot more than $20 cheaper than hardcopy, I don't see how an e-book can cost $140. Also, the content is extremely dull and hard do read, same level of useless detail like a pdf document of your central bank regulations. Had hoped this would be more interesting, like some scholarly articles about banks.

About the Author
Gail Simon:

I came to systemic practice through social work in the early 1980s when I trained in family therapy using structural, strategic and early Milan approaches. I undertook further training at the Kensington Consultation Centre (KCC) in London in the early 1990s. In 1990, I co-founded The Pink Practice as a response to oppressive psychotherapeutic practices against the lesbian, gay and queer communities. Lots of people think research is dull until they find out how many forms of inquiry there are which echo the values and activities of their own practice. My doctoral research was on “Writing (as) Systemic Practice” in which I experimented with dialogical writing styles to reflect my conversational and ethical practice in therapy, supervision and education. I lead the Professional Doctorate in Systemic Practice at the University of Bedfordshire and enjoy researching the extraordinariness that is involved in human systems and writing and editing for professional journals and for the new systemic practice publishing tent, Everything is Connected Press.

Alex Chard:

In the early part of my career I worked within the voluntary and statutory sectors with young people in trouble. I then began to work independently. I work as a systemic organisational consultant, a role which includes inquiry into organisational functioning, culture and practice. Over 23 , my consultancy practice has included public sector contexts including work within children’s social care, education, youth work, criminal justice and within the voluntary sector. My experience of assisting organisations manage change has included working with statutory boards, with management teams helping them to improve their services and on occasion managing services or critical projects. My current organisational inquiry and research contexts include conducting inter-agency case reviews where significant harm has been caused and in that context developing reflexive approaches to creating pan-organisational learning. My MSc. dissertation was a systemic inquiry into the impact of government inspection on the management of a service. My doctoral thesis The Art of Organisational Development was on creating systemic change and development in public sector management. I am also a visiting senior lecturer to the Professional Doctorate in Systemic Practice at the University of Bedfordshire and have developed a systemic module for a Social Work Masters Programme.

Kritek (chair, mental health nursing and management, Univ. of Texas Sch. of Nursing, Galveston) received a National Leadership Fellowship from the Kellogg Foundation in 1986 to study conflict resolution. That study gave birth to this "record of lessons from [her] life experiences at uneven tables," i.e., negotiations where one side has power over another. Including examples from her own experiences as the nondominant negotiator, Kritek intends to encourage dialog about "dominant power." Rather than offering practical methods for achieving equality, she suggests ten "ways of being" (e.g., "be a truth teller," "be innovative") to provide a philosophical context for nondominant negotiators to use when approaching uneven tables. Unfortunately, Kritek's penchant for rambling philosophical reflections leads to writing that is verbose, repetitive, and prone to digression and forces the reader to look hard for substance. Not recommended.

Negotiating at an Uneven Table has become a vital tool for my personal self actualization, professional communication, and daily growth. After reading this book, it is clear to see that most, if not all, tables are uneven. Regardless of which side of the table your on, Dr. Kritek provides tools for honest and successful negotiation. Her examples of the valleys and mountain top experiences and tables of life bring the actual events of life into a different and clearer perspective. Her words are honest and direct while being full of compassion. The chapter regarding manipulation has been espicially critical in assisting me identifing common techniques used by myself and others to control life. I strongly suggest this book for anyone sincerely interested in becoming a more honest, compassionate, and fullfilled person. Regardless of your profession, negotiation is a part of living and daily communication. Dr. Kritek provides a perspective to understand what is occouring and how to arrive at a win-win outcome. If winning is not an option, she helps to identify this reality and show you when to walk away.

About the Author
Stephen Orvis is professor of government and Associate Dean of Students for Academics at Hamilton College. He is a specialist on sub-Saharan Africa (Kenya in particular), identity politics, democratic transitions, and the political economy of development. He has taught introduction to comparative politics for 25 years, as well as courses on African politics, nationalism and the politics of identity, political economy of development, and weak states. He has written a book and articles on agricultural development in Kenya, has written several articles on civil society in Africa and Kenya, and is currently doing research on political institutions in Africa. Carol Ann Drogus is Senior Associate Director of Off-Campus Study at Colgate University. She is a specialist on Brazil, religion, and women's political participation. She taught introduction to comparative politics for 15 years, as well as courses on Latin American politics, gender and politics, and women in Latin America. She has written two books and numerous articles on the political participation of women in religious movements in Brazil.

Great book, comes with mini case studies that help understand the concepts of each chapter perfectly. Love the side definitions also very elaborate. Unsure if the printing company meant to but pages 94-98 are missing. :-(

Good Undergrad Introductory Text

Good comprehensive textbook for comparative politics, covering issues ranging from the role of ideology and religion in national stability to arguments in monetary policy. This text presumes no previous background in international affairs and the format and presentation are comparatively elementary. As others have mentioned, the hybrid format allows for tremendous flexibility in teaching.
