Interesting comparison

I liked the comparison that the author made between Fatima, daughter of the prophet Mohammed and Mary, the mother of Jesus. There were interesting parallels drawn between how early scholars in Christianity and Islam viewed the two women.

A Terrific Organic Text and Reference

Dr. Paul Scudder was my undergraduate organic chemistry teacher at New College of USF in Sarasota, FL. His book continues to sit on my shelf even now, as I am working on my Ph.D. in synthetic medicinal chemistry. We used it along with Dr. Seyhan Ege's undergraduate Organic Chemistry text, which is a traditional "white-pages" type of organic text. His class was the best class I took in my entire four years of college, and I cannot recommend his book highly enough to anyone who truly wishes to gain a fundamental understanding of organic chemistry principles. It was a tremendous help to me both in college, as well as in grad school while preparing for my qualifiers. The book is written at a level that is accessible to college underclassmen, but it is also useful for upper level undergraduate and graduate students who would like to review important organic chemistry concepts or see the concepts presented in a new, easy to assimilate, way. His 3-D reaction coordinate graphs, pathway decision cubes, and pathway classification schemes are some of the strongest points of the book. He also presents some advanced theories such as HOMO-LUMO and HSAB theories that are often not really taught to undergraduates, and these are extremely well-done and easy to follow. Dr. Scudder has great passion for his subject, and that is apparent in his book.
The few minor and petty problems with the book that I can think of are that he assumes that the reader has some previous organic background knowledge, the writing is sometimes choppy and jumps around, and the graphics are not state-of-the-art, as he did them himself. Chapter 2, on thermodynamics and kinetics, is especially difficult to follow for someone who has no knowledge about these subjects.

indispensable tool for organic chemistry students-all levels

A superb, well-organized classification of organic chemistry for practitioners at all levels. Clear, concise, with a large number of charts and graphs, some of which are indispensable. A handbook which boils down most of what you need to know to understand a wide spectrum of organic reaction mechanisms. Reminds me of the Washington University medical manual series, which filtered all the medical knowledge of each subspecialty essential for daily use into a single pocket handbook.

Paul Scudder approaches organic chemistry from a completely different angle. While most organic books stress that a student memorize hundreds of seemingly unrelated reactions, this text is different. It teaches you the tools to classify organic reactions and solve them logically. This book and its method should be the standard for how organic chemistry is taught.

Good Introduction to SDN

I have heard of SDN for quite a while. From time to time, I read some articles about it from different sources. However, I still have no solid idea what it is about. I only know that it can be a disruptive technology which can cause troubles to incumbent players like Cisco. I wanted to have a source to tell me the driving forces for SDN, its architecture and how it is different from the traditional one.

I found the answers in this e-book (there is no hardcopy version). It is not a long book so I would not divulge much out of respect for the author. Suffice it to say that (1) There is a software driven (or defined) SDN controller to oversee the network. The networking hardwares will be relegated to the role of forwarding data; (2) spanning trees are going to disappear which is a good news; (3) A bunch of open-source protocols, including Netconf, are available to administer and manage SDN; (4) SDN will be short-lived if it cannot operate well in a cloud environment. No worry, it interfaces with OpenStack using a plugin called Quantum.

SDN is interesting both academically and technologically. This is the first book on the market from which I learnt the basics which will enable me to understand what is being said and written about SDN.

The Table of Contents looked like just what I needed for a technical and architectural primer on SDN. Each chapter started off with promise, but just as it began to get to something of substance, the chapter ended.
Mediocre writing, up satisfying content. OK if you're just looking for a glossary, but for concepts it's no better than scanning Wikipedia.

I've used it as an introduction and from there research further on specific topics.

Marvelous story about magic and WWII.

Just finished this marvelous book that read more like fiction than real life. The glow of battle is still upon me. Jasper Maskelyne was a terrific magician from a family of magicians who took his skills to battle in WWII. He created whole armies out of wood and mirrors. He moved the Suez Canal and the port of Alexandria. This was a terrific read.

History many don't know about - Very interestingly written

Using magic to win the war? Sounds like a movie or something fictional, but it was true and has a great story to go with it. You'll want to read the whole thing even if you are not a huge history buff. It's just real interesting and many of the tacktics are still being used in some form today.

You must understand that this is war-fiction and that while many of the events actually happened, that he was more of a figurehead than the actual creator of many of these stunts. The book is a quick read and enjoyable if kept in that context.

Fascinating and important essays on photography

John Berger is a really intriguing and stimulating writer. Essays are his forte. Berger has had a life-long interest and involvement in photography. His collaborations with the photographer Jean Mohr (A Seventh Man, A Fortunate Man and Another Way of Telling) were truly original and have been highly influential. So it is great to have this collection of all his essays on photography.

I am not wild about the paperback format which I purchased. Aperture produce some exquisite books - see their recent books in the 'Workshop' series (Larry Fink and the Webbs) - but this is not quite up to their usual standard. It feels a little cramped, the cover is not one I enjoy holding in my hand. Sorry, Aperture... wish you had done the contents full justice.

Small and Important Book from True Connoisseur of Photography

This is a very eloquent and very, very intelligent reading. Although quality of printing of my copy has something to be desired. Anyway, he is an extremely talented observer and real connoisseur of historical photography. It is what makes John Berger such a wonderful practical critic and reader of individual photographs. Recommended.
