Gibson's Best Collection Yet!

Andrea Gibson turns a corner with their latest collection, "The Madness Vase." I have been following their writing career since 2006, and their growth has been steady - until now. I have always considered Gibson one of the best living poets in America, and still the poems in this book shocked me to my very core. They are patient, yet powerful and vivid. The images will linger with you for days and even weeks. Quite simply, every lover of poetry needs to read this book as quickly as possible. It's a game-changer. A bold statement that Gibson belongs in every discussion of quality contemporary poetry, and that they are here to stay.

If you are only allowed to own one book, let this be it. These poems are filled with love and life. If you haven't bought her audio poems on ITunes do that first. You need her voice in your head. You need it in everything you do and every relationship you carry.

Fantastic and moving poetry collection

Andrea Gibson doesn't just tug on your heart strings, she grabs them in both hands and pulls your heart out so you can see exactly what it's made of. This collection of poetry is stunning in how human it is. She writes beautifully, and covers topics that are typically viewed as somewhat sensitive in nature. There is a good balance of quirky humor and seriousness. All said, this is my favorite collection of poetry from a modern author. A must-read.

Assigned Reading

I was assigned this book for a history class and did not have much knowledge on this subject beforehand. Perhaps this book would be better for someone who has already studied eschatology, but it is a poor choice for someone new to the subject. The book reads like one long run-on sentence. It has poor transitions between subjects and it poorly edited with many typos and misspellings. The subject matter is interesting but it is not easily accessible for the average or even above-average reader. As a textbook for a history class it's awful, which is not necessarily the book's fault, but my teacher's fault.

This is a must have for anyone who uses Excel. From the comfortable writing style to the excellent and clearly worded examples I can not recommend this book highly enough, regardless of your skill level with Excel.

In this day and age of online lessons and the ease of just 'Googling' whatever the current need is it's still nice to have a hard copy handy. Mine is never far from my desk. I consider myself a fairly advanced Excel user, at least compared to what I usually see around me in the IT world and I am still learning a lot from Oz. Most just use Excel for quick and dirty lists (and messy ones at that) but there are so many more possibilities - this book is a great resource for those that know just enough to be dangerous and need a little nudge to go from barely usable to very flexible and accurate.

Great for the beginning to intermediate Excel user.

I highly recommend this book to beginners and intermediate Excel users. The authors make the topics covered very accessible. I consider myself an intermediate user but still found things of interest in this book.

Regarding the book's physical aspects; I wasn't too impressed with the binding at first but warmed up to it when I realized I could lay the book flat while working with it on my pc. The paper quality is a non-issue for me. The paper is not high-gloss but the book isn't $40 either.

I received this book as a gift during a conference that Oz was conducting a workshop. I work with a fairly large database that can draw out information through SQL commands and the added benefit of using Excel to analyze data has been invaluable, thanks to the lessons learned in this book. I highly recommend this to beginner and intermediate users of Excel.

Misleading title

Be sure to notice the small print under the main title "in Detail". This seems to be a book for a seamstress. It is all close up details, no full length pix at all, which is good if that is what you want. I wasn't thorough enough when I ordered this, and expected a book called "Modern Fashion" to be something different. So, just be sure this is what you are looking for. I would return it, or give it to a friend who sews or likes these details.

EXQUISITE!

This book is truly gorgeous with its fantastic close up photographs of details of 20th century garments. There are chapters devoted to bows, to buttons, sleeves and so on. This book actually came before Avril Hart's "Fashion in detail - 17th & 18th Century Clothes" and together they will keep you occupied for many hours. I only wish there were more volumes. Sheer heaven!

In Kolmar, tall young horse-farmer Lanen Kaelar dreams of meeting the True Dragons of the remote West. Soon, a Harvest ship, braving the terrible winter storms, will set off for Dragon Isle to seek valuable lansip leaves and fruit (they heal ills and prolong life). Though the chances of a successful return are small, Lanen will be aboard, along with Marik (he may be Lanen's father; he certainly has sold his firstborn child to demons). On Dragon Isle, Lanen meets Akor, the magnificent silver King of the Dragons, and finds that, somehow, she can speak with him telepathically; they fall utterly in love. But their love is forbidden by the Council of Dragons because of ancient strife between dragon and human. Meanwhile, Marik and his sorcerous sidekick, Caderan, are plotting all manner of wickedness. Eventually, Marik will grab Lanen (she is his daughter) and attempt to feed her to a demon; Akor, grievously wounded in defending her, is magically transformed into a man, and Marik has his brains scrambled by Akor's vengeful subjects. The Ultimate Romantic Fantasy!

Song in the Silence is one of the best fantasy books I have ever read, and I have read many! The book is primarily about the relationship between a woman, Lanen Kaelar, and a dragon. The setting is in another world that has an almost medieval feel to it. The author's writing style is superb and the book begs for a sequel. It is hard not to fall in love with the characters. Lanen is very strong willed and goes up against many dangers and terrible odds just to fulfil her dream of meeting real dragons. The book is a must of all who enjoyed Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern series. A pure joy to read. Delightful and entertaining. Romance and fantasy are skillfully interwoven in this brilliant book.

Fabulous story - a must for all dragon lovers

Thank you Elizabeth Kerner! I am so tired of dragons being portrayed as angry, blood-thirsty killer beasts with no concious thought. Dragons are noble, wise, ancient, and fantastic creatures and here Elizabeth Kerner has captured these aspects with a new resounding flare.
When I began this book, the story was understandable and well thought through. The scenes and descriptions were vivid and thouroughly enjoyable. However, first person POV can be difficult for many people,(mainly because few authors write in it) and this book has many first persons - but I recomend patience and persistance. For thos who don't have patience, try to find some (you will be well rewarded), soon after the POV shifting began and I had accepted it, it no longer became a struggle to read, but actually brought a new depth to the story.
I recommend this tale (and *The Lesser Kindred*) to all women. Lanen is a Phenomonal and strong woman, to whom all women can relate and see something of themselves (past, present, and future) in her.

Different Style

First, I *love* dragons, and I'm a fiend for romance, so it's no surprise that I really enjoyed this book! Lanen was a great character to "live" with, and Akor (the dragon) was amazing. However. The reviews are true -- the book is a bit predictable with the "evil" that they face. I also found the long, drawn out explanatory passages a bit tedious, and the narrative style was difficult to adjust to, as well. I don't tend toward first person narrative, and this book is written in MULTIPLE first person narrative. The POV character switches in the middle of the scene, and often, in the middle of dialog. It's not confusing, it's just not "typical." Sometimes I felt like I wanted the author to pick one POV character and stick with it!!! I didn't need the internal thoughts of EVERYONE -- the good guys, the bad guys, minor characters, EVERYONE has their own POV.
Of course, if you can get past that, the book is amazing. It takes a while to get to the romance, and in that you have your typical fantasy plot, but all in all its a good mix of the two. The romance is very enjoyable, however.
Ms. kerner did a good job, and I look forward to reading the future books in this series!

An essential addition to public health literature

As Paul Farmer described it, "Global surgery is the neglected step-child of global public health." Without a doubt, that was true when he said it a few years back and continues to be true, though there is finally progress being made. Books such as this one are as essential for the conversation they start as they are for the content contained within. Luckily, this book succeeds on both counts.

Both of the authors of this books, one a urologist and the other a general surgeon, have extensive experience in global surgery - both seen as a medical mission and, as they hope to develop it, as an element of public health. They have drawn liberally from these experiences, as they critically evaluate the (paucity) of literature available in the journals. Naturally, the book begins with an exposition on the current global burden of surgical disease, thought to be about 11% of DALY's in low and middle income countries (and expanding as non-communicable disease continues to skyrocket), and contrasts that with the minimal amount of money and effort that has been expended. The book then delves deeper into the usual suspect of public health concepts, such as measurements of burden, cost-effectiveness, etc.

For those who have not heard of global surgery, the first portion of the book will be eye opening. For those who have some experience with the concept, it is the next portion that elucidates nutrition, trauma, obstetric care, the acute abdomen, and fairly basic procedures such as non-incarcerated hernia repair. The book goes into some detail about the specific disease related DALYs lost and the cost-effectiveness of intervention in each particular area. (These concepts are expanded upon in the last section of the book).

In addition to the above, what I found most valuable was the discussion of tailoring the delivery of surgical services to a given regions needs AND cultural attitudes. There are specific examples of a Himalayan cataract organization, one of the author's efforts to bring laparascopy abroad, and others. This leads into a discussion on the importance of disruptive innovation and collaboration with our engineering and design colleagues in coming up with cheaper solutions that are also effective. You cannot just give expensive CT scanners to low-income hospitals, as they will not be able to afford the upkeep and repairs. Instead, we must find ways to replicate the success of initiatives that have found indigenous solutions, such as the use of mosquito nets as hernia meshes.

Overall then, I think this is an excellent synthesis of the global surgery knowledge to date (with ample references). Like many of these global public health books, I don't know that more experienced individuals will come away with a huge amount of concrete data or plans, but instead a deeper understanding of where we are today and where we are currently headed. Given that surgery is still on the outside looking in to the world of public health (especially in terms of NGO's), this is a conversation that needs to be continued.
