Highly recommended with or without T-Racks

If I did not have T-Racks I would still give this book a perfect score. There is great, concise, easily readable and well-organized value here. Assuming the reader's recording is DAW-based, this book is about the best I've seen in general info and instruction in the area, again, even if one doesn't have/use T-Racks.

Perhaps it's not for the easily-insulted, seasoned professional. But it should be great for anyone from "more-than-total-beginner" on up to pro precisely because of the choice of information provided (and omitted) and the layout. I am a former pro musician, with recording and live-sound experience and, even though I could say "I know" a lot of what is presented here, I'll humbly and honestly say that I'm thankful for and benefitted by this book. It is as though someone had taken the best, dog-eared articles from a huge stack of electronic recording magazines and put them into one concise and graspable resource. There may not be 1000 pages of random, overwhelming creativity insights, but if you absorb (or re-absorb) the principles in this book, you will operate from a fundamentally sound base from which creative "color" will either come naturally or could be sought in other tomes.

As to the "with or without T-Racks" comment: the book addresses the current t-racks "deluxe" model in which all components can be used as stand-alone inserts. Theses "components" are in turn software models of classic hardware devices. So the book is really discussing DAW mixing & mastering in the context of classic hardware audio principles. Other than stating he likes and uses T-Racks, the author does not appear to be "selling" the suite and that does not come off as the book's purpose at all (legitimate quality production and reader success does believably seem to be the goal). That said, authorizing this book may be among the best marketing decisions IK Multimedia has made, and I've got no problem with that. Based on this book, I just bought "Music 3.0" and will be looking for other titles by this author.

"Hands-On" approach to T-Racks

This book is great for a beginner/intermediate level user that wants to try out some mastering "in the box". I don't recommend this book to anyone that is not using T-Racks, however. There is not enough generic mastering information to warrant a purchase of this particular book if you do not own T-Racks. I would recommend Bobby's other book on mastering or if you are VERY serious about learning the art and science of mastering audio, I would recommend the book by Bob Katz which is a lot more detailed (sometimes to a fault, "yawn"). This book is a great overall handbook for T-Racks and has some great practical suggestions on how to use the processors to their fullest potential. It is laid out very neatly and has many pictures as well as sample settings for each module. My only complaint is that it is a bit short. I read it in less than two hours and was left wanting much more. The target audience seems to be aimed more towards the beginner and it more than meets any expectations from a novice. The only thing that I could think of that would amp it up would be to include a DVD that contains some real-world examples.

Great for anyone who's new to Mastering in T-Racks 3

This book is a great read if you are new to mastering, and more specifically, if you are new to mastering with T-Racks 3 Standard or Deluxe. It includes a lot of basic information and some helpful tips and tricks. The book also covers a lot of the same ground as the T-Racks 3 Deluxe User's Manual, so if you've already read the manual, you're in for a review.

However, there's a lot of additional information found here, such as default "starting point" settings for each of the T-Racks 3 modules, and extensive coverage of the Metering section, which is one of T-Racks most powerful features. You'll also learn about working with multiple files, various formats, dithering, using the Compare feature, loop-points, fades, and exporting your project. All-in-all, it's a worthwhile read if you're either a beginning or experienced user of T-Racks 3 Deluxe.

In addition to this book, I would also highly recommend "Mastering with T-Racks" instructional DVD-ROM by Michael Costa from Groove3, especially if you're a more hands-on learner.

A celebration of life, books, words, and humanity.

Have you ever had a book that you were simultaneously unable to wait for and very scared of reading? That was Matt Haig’s Reasons to Stay Alive [Matt is the author of The Humans, which you should ALL know by now that I LOVE]. I’m sure you can tell from the title a little of what it’s about, and you may or may not have been able to guess why I was nervous to read it. I am depressed. I have depression. I am a depressive. Do you know how terrified I am to say that? Petrified. But I’m going to say it because it will make it that much more clear why I needed and appreciated this book. From the very moment I heard about it, I needed it.

I read this entire book in roughly 4.5 hours. I devoured it. I also cried more than I have probably EVER cried while reading a book. But I also smiled. Maybe not a lot, but it happened. The synopsis says “It’s also an upbeat, joyous and very funny exploration of how to live better, love better, read better and feel more.” I was pleased to find that to be very true. I felt a lot reading this book. I like that Matt mentioned that not everyone’s depression is the same, that you can be both happy and sad at the same time (“just as you can be a sober alcoholic”), and how most people will not be able to see it:

"To other people, it sometimes seems like nothing at all. You are walking around with your head on fire and no one can see the flames."

Matt said at one point he hoped someone else would read his words and that maybe the pain he felt wasn’t for nothing. I know it wasn’t for nothing, but THANK YOU, Matt, for writing this book, for being brave and open and honest, for showing me I wasn’t alone no matter what the depression told me, for telling me that life will wait for me, for The Humans, for all of your words, for being alive.

Love this Book

Like most people who suffer from anxiety and depression, I read anything about the subject, hoping to find the magic key that will unlock my troubles. I realize, from reading books like this, that I could be much, much worse. I have not found the answer, yet, but reading about others who suffer like me helps me remember that I am not the only one; I am not "crazy" . And maybe, as Mr. Haig says, the reason is so I can help someone with the same problem. I have been battling this for nearly30 years. Maybe I should stop the battle and accept.

A COMFORTING AND HELPFUL READ

I found this book to be comforting. It is a book I discovered while going through yet again a very dark time in my life. I have come to believe that there is no complete or final cure for my depression and anxiety. But this book has helped. I wrote down some of Matt Haig's passages in one of my journals...so that I can re-read them when my depression and/or anxiety starts to overwhelm me. It had been suggested to me over the years to try and accept my feelings of depression/anxiety in psychotherapy as Mr. Haig suggests in his book. Wise words I believe, even though exasperatingly difficult.

It is healing and soothing to know that many of us experience this illness, and that I am not alone. I believe it took a great deal of courage for Mr. Haig to share his story. It is too late to share this book with my brother as his illness overcame his desire to live...that he did not find even one reason to continue living. I am grateful that I found this book...thankful that reading it has eased some of my pain.

The recipes from this book "call out" to you....

I loved this book. The pictures are enticing, and the detailed instructions will enable even the most inept baker to produce beautiful and tasty loaves of bread, fromt he very plain to the very festive. It gave me the courage to try making Sourdough from scratch, including the starter. I've been making sourdough every 2-3 days ever since! I would like to caution novice bread bakers that the cooking temps for most of the breads are 425 to 475 degrees, and I was not able to do that in my over or the loaves would burn on the bottom. I baked mine at the traditonal 350 degrees for a longer cooking time and they came out great!

A READER correction.

"Page 144 the "Pain D' Epice" French Honey Spice Bread, 1 loaf. Calls for 1 1/2 cups honey, 1 1/3 cups milk, 2 eggs, spices AND 1/2 cup of flour."

Actually, page 144 calls for 3/4 cup plus two table spoons of whole-wheat flour AND 3/4 cup plus two tablespoons of rye flour.

I have baked this twice and it always comes out perfect.

turn on the oven, is baking time!

This is an amazing book. It is so complete and detailed.
My previous experiences in bread baking were with betty crocker. I liked the recipes but I wanted to go a step further. With so many books about baking bread, it was a hard choice but I decided on this one because I saw that it was filled with pictures. I'm so glad that I chose this 'cause it is indeed a great book. The recipes are incredible and the techniques also.
The book starts with a "gallery of breads", beautiful pictures of french, english, italian, european and middle eastern breads.
Then it shows different types of flours (with more pictures), then the techniques step by step on how to prepare the yeast, how to make a starter, mixing, kneading, shaping and baking. Photos of different kinds of glazing and toppings follow this chapter. Then the recipes. I think I've tried every recipe that is in this book. Not one of them turned out bad. They were espectacular. Outside and inside.
I cannot recommend this book enough.
