Detailed Memoir

This kindlebook of Ogilvy on Advertising by David Ogilvy covers information such as the top of jobs in advertising and some of the people he hired into advertising. For instance, he recalls hiring a 40 year old copywriter who changed jobs eleven times. Creative directors, researchers, account executives, brand managers, directors, and copywriters are some of the jobs mentioned in his book. Ogilvy also mentioned about his job assignment where he advised Omega, a watch company in Switzerland, about their advertising (and of course much more is included in this kindlebook).

Learn from one of the Masters in Advertising

Let's face it, Ogilvy made great headway for the advertising industry. I'd even go as far as saying that his advertising methods are among the best the world has ever seen.

If you're new to the business, interested in the business, or even an old ad dog running out of tricks, you need to own this book. The best part about this book has got to be the visual references of some of the most successful ad campaigns since the dawn of advertising. If you don't take away some new ideas, you need to read it again.

Some of the techniques might be slightly outdated, but you shouldn't rely too heavily on one book for inspiration and information anyway. Also check out

Worth reading

So my boss recomended me to read this book, and told me everyone that works in the advertising business should know about mr. Ogilvy. And he is right, everybody should know who this man is, and I can see why he was so successful in his time. The core content in this book probably still applies, but this book was written in 1985, and I think we can all agree that the advertising business has evolved rapidly during this period. I would recomend all to read this just to know the history of this intelligent man, and I would recomend everybody to read this book if you are looking for an equally good book, with more updated information: Hey, Whipple, Squeeze This: The Classic Guide to Creating Great Ads.

John Ewart is a systems architect, software developer, and lecturer. He has taught courses at a variety of institutions including the University of California, California State University, and local community colleges, covering a wide range of computer science topics including Java, data structures and algorithms, operating systems fundamentals, UNIX and Linux systems administration, and web application development. In addition to working and teaching, he maintains and contributes to a number of open source projects. John currently resides in Sonora, California with his wife, Mary, and their two children.

Instant Chef Starter, by John Ewart

Instant Chef Starter is an introductory book about Chef, an open-source configuration management and automation platform. John Ewart and Packt Publishing have published a book that will allow a system administrator with no prior Chef experience to get Chef up and running within a day, if not a few hours, by using this guide. If one has already decided that buying a book is the best way to learn Chef basics, I can easily recommend this one.

The book opens with a clear introduction of Chef, along with descriptions of basic components, concepts, and terminology. The biggest benefit to using Chef, or any configuration management software, is to automate and ease the burden of multi-server administration.

(Note that John elected to omit Chef solo and hosted Chef from this book.)

The following section covers installation with a promise to give clear guidance on installation to Debian-based and Redhat-based distributions, as well as a source based install. While the Debian-based and source-based installation instructions were very clear and easy to follow, the Redhat-based instructions were missing. I'm sure that finding the proper installation method would not be difficult for most, and given most Chef users are Debian/Ubuntu proponents, this omission is minor.

Over the next few sections, John takes us through bootstrapping a Chef client, managing cookbooks, recipies, and attributes, as well as data bags and templates. I like the introduction via knife and the web UI and then moving onto knife for more command line power. This allows the reader to see both sides of Chef management and choose what might work best for them.

While this book was designed to introduce Chef to a beginner, I would have liked to see mention made of idempotent operations, source control backed cookbooks and recipes, as well as running chef-client regularly to maintain system state over time rather than ad-hoc execution.

While managing a few servers is not a daunting task for any but the most beginner of system administrator, I would have liked to see an example made mention of which better quantifies the benefits of using a configuration management tool-set once the servers being managed reaches the double digits or further. Take, for instance, the management of 30 servers. Once an operation must be performed on 30 servers that takes 2 minutes for each server, the result is 1 hour of time if no issues are discovered through the process. This could be off-set with Chef in under 10 minutes and off to more important tasks.

While I did find a couple of issues with the book, overall I enjoyed reading it, and found that it provided clear instruction on how to deploy Chef into an enterprise environment. I regularly use Chef to manage client systems and appreciate the benefits that it brings to a system administrator or devops engineer. Configuration management advances and brings standardization to the profession of system administration.

Just waste of money. Nothing clear. I bought this overpriced book along with Chef Infrastructure Automation and have feeling that first time my money is simply wasted. Opscode website has real good documents if you want to learn chef.

Severely in need of a rewrite to bring it current.

As I said in a replay to another post, this may have been a useful book a year and a half ago, but the codebase is so significantly changed that everything is obsolete. There is no need to add an apt repository. The versions of Ubuntu, Debian and Chef referenced are out of date. The dependencies are no longer dependencies as the current installer is complete. And the available documentation online is much more complete. Sure, it might get you familiar with the terminology and concepts, but the main website will do that. This is useless for the current versions of software and is in bad need of a rewrite to bring it current.

That being said, it might be a good resource for a Linux initiate who has very limited knowledge of Linux servers and needs to understand how the software works in general. But in that case, I would recommend other, more current books that can provide a better foundation for Linux and Chef. The online documentation is much more valuable than this book in its current revision.

That survey, say the authors, provides the first data showing a direct, statistically verifiable link between digital games and professional behavior in the workplace. The authors express their analysis in clean, crisp prose devoid of jargon, making it accessible for non-gamers, especially non-gamers who are managers. "Gamers believe that winning matters," Beck and Wade contend, and gamers also place "a high value on competence—wanting to be an expert in the first place"—all of which makes the video game generation, estimated by the authors to be some 90 million strong, an influential force in the work place. The book touches on a handful of other ways in which gamers differ from non-gamers and provides suggestions on how employers can take advantage of their unique values and skills. Some readers may find themselves grinding their teeth at many of the authors’ upbeat conclusions about the benefits video game players will bring to the business world, but most will find the pair’s findings fascinating and provocative.

Hope for the future of gamers.......

I bought this book 10 years ago when my high school aged son was devoting all of his energies to World of Warcraft. My wife and I were looking for hope for the future when we came across this book. We learned that he might have been learning project management skills that would hold him in good stead when he got a meaningful job, hoping, in fact, that he would. Today he is a Software Engineer at Amazon! There is hope out there parents.

Got Game

As an over-achieving boomer who barely took time for fun, let alone games, I feel I have been introduced to a whole new world by reading Got Game. I have raised, taught, and managed gamers without knowing the extent to which they functioned in a world very different from my own. Oh, we all recognize the concept of "generation gap", but even so we don't often have the opportunity to have the details of that gap explained to us in the enjoyable way we do by reading Got Game. Beck and Wade make the exploration of the gaming phenomenon an insightful and fun journey into the minds of people we work with, or perhaps even members of our own families. It was a real wake-up call. I've even been phoning my own now-professional children to ask them about their gaming experiences.

As a former college-level business instructor, I see an important application for this book not only in business but in business education. It should be on the must-read list of all educators.

One more thing--I've decided I have to get a Game Boy!

You'll either love it or hate it. I loved it.

To start, it's not about how it's OK to hole-up and game all day. But it does make a solid case for gaming---and that means your current point-of-view is to going to quickly shape your reaction to this book. But hang in there...because you really can't ignore the truth of the impact on risk-taking, perseverance, innovation...and it's role in shaping managers. No matter how you feel about gaming...and whether you game or not...this book provides and insightful look into what's shaping the next crop of managers. Resource scarcity shaped my grandfather; the boundless optimism of the 50s shaped my Dad. TV and "instant solutions" (read "this quarter...") shaped me. Games are shaping my son. I think he's the one to watch.

Interesting comparison

I liked the comparison that the author made between Fatima, daughter of the prophet Mohammed and Mary, the mother of Jesus. There were interesting parallels drawn between how early scholars in Christianity and Islam viewed the two women.

A Terrific Organic Text and Reference

Dr. Paul Scudder was my undergraduate organic chemistry teacher at New College of USF in Sarasota, FL. His book continues to sit on my shelf even now, as I am working on my Ph.D. in synthetic medicinal chemistry. We used it along with Dr. Seyhan Ege's undergraduate Organic Chemistry text, which is a traditional "white-pages" type of organic text. His class was the best class I took in my entire four years of college, and I cannot recommend his book highly enough to anyone who truly wishes to gain a fundamental understanding of organic chemistry principles. It was a tremendous help to me both in college, as well as in grad school while preparing for my qualifiers. The book is written at a level that is accessible to college underclassmen, but it is also useful for upper level undergraduate and graduate students who would like to review important organic chemistry concepts or see the concepts presented in a new, easy to assimilate, way. His 3-D reaction coordinate graphs, pathway decision cubes, and pathway classification schemes are some of the strongest points of the book. He also presents some advanced theories such as HOMO-LUMO and HSAB theories that are often not really taught to undergraduates, and these are extremely well-done and easy to follow. Dr. Scudder has great passion for his subject, and that is apparent in his book.
The few minor and petty problems with the book that I can think of are that he assumes that the reader has some previous organic background knowledge, the writing is sometimes choppy and jumps around, and the graphics are not state-of-the-art, as he did them himself. Chapter 2, on thermodynamics and kinetics, is especially difficult to follow for someone who has no knowledge about these subjects.

indispensable tool for organic chemistry students-all levels

A superb, well-organized classification of organic chemistry for practitioners at all levels. Clear, concise, with a large number of charts and graphs, some of which are indispensable. A handbook which boils down most of what you need to know to understand a wide spectrum of organic reaction mechanisms. Reminds me of the Washington University medical manual series, which filtered all the medical knowledge of each subspecialty essential for daily use into a single pocket handbook.

A revolutionary way of approaching organic chemistry

Paul Scudder approaches organic chemistry from a completely different angle. While most organic books stress that a student memorize hundreds of seemingly unrelated reactions, this text is different. It teaches you the tools to classify organic reactions and solve them logically. This book and its method should be the standard for how organic chemistry is taught.
