A slow, sweet seduction

PROS:
- The way in which Jack slowly opens up to Will's hints and advances is beautifully done. I know a man who didn't face his homosexuality until he was in his 50s whose awakening proceeded in almost exactly the same way as Jack's does in this book.
- Good examination of the internal uncertainty on the part of both characters; Will thinks Jack will decide he's straight (or at least that he doesn't want to explore whether or not he's really gay), and Jack thinks that Will's just looking for another notch on his belt. Of course, we readers have the benefit of witnessing their blossoming I-don't-trust-this-but-I-can't-help-falling-for-him-anyway feelings also.
- The buildup of feelings and desire on the way to the characters' first sexual encounter is very well done. Each scene is a bit more erotic and a bit less tentative than the last. And I LOVE how patient Will is with Jack's hesitance and inexperience.
- The sex, when we finally get to it (not a complaint; I love the slow speed at which physical intimacy escalates), is sensual and explosive and delightful. And there's a kissing scene that's almost as hot as any of the sex scenes.
- Jack's sons are realistically portrayed and add a nice amount of gravity.
- Far fewer typos and editing issues in this than in many other m/m books I've read.

CON:
- Premise that's a stretch to believe. The difference in age is significant--14 years--as is the difference in lifestyle, education, and emotional background. But I must say, I loved the characters so much that after a few chapters, I happily allowed myself to dismiss any misgivings about the story idea.

Overall comments: If you're looking for erotica, this might not be a good choice for you; there's sexual tension throughout the book, but it doesn't really contain that much sex (as compared to most other m/m romances I've read). But if you enjoy reading about the emotional connection between two men with an occasional hot sex scene thrown in here and there, this is a lovely read.

Good writing, emo story.

Not a bad book, I guess, but the relationship between Will and Jack progresses along very predictable lines and then devolves into a mega-helping of pure emo: lots of angst, introspection, and melodrama. The confrontation with Jack's sons just had me laughing -- and not in a good way. I couldn't help thinking that this kind of situation would only play out like this in the movies (and formulaic romance novels, apparently).

The novel's beginning held my interest but, as often happens in romances of this type, the story started careening out of control about halfway through, like a car rolling down a mountain road with the brakes failing. Jack's constant and brooding ruminations read more like the entries in a love-sick schoolgirl's diary than the real thoughts of a 44-year-old working-class man coming to grips with being attracted to another man.

As for Will, he describes himself at one point as a "Drama Queen"; I couldn't describe him any better myself. By book's end I was ready to see the last of Will. He was, in my opinion, "a mile wide and an inch deep", personality-wise. Jack was the more interesting character of the two and deserved someone better, deeper.

There was potential for an interesting, credible story in "Handyman", but it just wasn't happening for me.

excellent gay romance

I really enjoyed this book. I am a sucker for a good romance novel, and have to say this is the best one I have read. Too many gay novels focus on sex and lack substance, however, I found this novel to have character and heart. I couldn't put the book down and finished it in a few hours. It is very easy to read and doesn't require much thought- which is exactly what I look for in a book. The characters were needy and always questioning the others intentions- but for me this is perfect! The same thoughts and have raced through my own head many times when I am in a relationship, but once you build trust, they seem to melt away.

Not my first pick, but may be good supplment for hikers.

After reading many reviews, I purchased this book, BACKCOUNTRY COOKING, and THE BACK-COUNTRY KITCHEN by Teresa Marrone. I can't help but compare the two books, so my opinion on this book is relative to my opinion of the other.

The introduction of BACKCOUNTRY COOKING categorizes camp chefs as Ascetics, Pragmatists or Gourmands. This book leans heavily toward the ascetic-pragmatist end of the scale. As the subtitle, FROM PACK TO PLATE IN 10 MINUTES, may suggest, the emphasis is on quickly-prepared meals. As a consequence, the meals tend to be simple. If you're someone for whom part of the challenge of the camp experience is to create fabulous multi-course meals in the wild, this book is not for you. And, as expected for a book from BACKPACKER magazine, the emphasis is on light packing and cooking with a single-burner stove.

The first part of the book discusses ingredients, tool and procedures as does Marrone's book, but I find the discussion in THE BACK-COUNTRY KITCHEN to be better and more complete, in particular, providing much more detail in home drying foods. BACKCOUNTRY COOKING discusses a plethora of grains, most of which I've never seen in a grocery store. (Different kinds of oats, different kinds of rice, bread bases, etc.) Baking methods are very briefly touched upon, but the book goes little beyond single-burner stove-top cooking.

Sidebars from different magazine contributors are interspersed throughout the book, and give good tips. Some black-and-white photos are also sprinkled throughout the book.

After the introduction, the book goes into the chapters containing the recipes, with each chapter representing a meal or course. One very nice thing is that each recipe includes nutritional information.

Now, I just have a so-so opinion of this book, and it was hard for me to establish why. Like I said, I found the introductory information to be better in the other book. But I think part of my indifference is due to the recipes. There seem to be a lot of ethnic foods - Oriental, Middle Eastern, Mexican. The desserts are mostly rice and bread puddings (yick), and include mincemeat (for dessert?!). Maybe you eat a lot of hummus, but I suspect many people will find that a lot of the recipes are not the kind of things you find at home, and perhaps the trail is not the best place to find out that your body has strange reactions to strange food. Furthermore, many of the ingredients, such as the grains and beans, are things I just don't see in the local supermarket. To the author's credit, they give a complete appendix of mail-order companies, but I'm not particularly excited about paying shipping to experiment with recipes.

Teresa Marrone's book, although including more multi-burner, multi-pot recipes for canoeists, car campers and others able to carry more gear, also has many single-burner lightweight recipes for hiking. It seemed to me that her book had more recipes that BACKCOUNTRY COOKING but, in fact, the number of recipes were similar. (BACKCOUNTRY COOKING has 144, and THE BACK-COUNTRY KITCHEN has 150.)

My recommendation is to start with Marrone's THE BACK-COUNTRY KITCHEN. If you feel the need for more single-burner meals, or more quickly-prepared meals, augment it with BACKCOUNTRY COOKING.

Finally a book for those that like to eat

This book is excellent. It may not have the largest number of recipes, but the ones it does have are well thought out, backpacker friendly, and just plain good. The book has a lot of variety too. Each recipe is organized into two parts, the pre-hike preparation (what to do at home) and then then a on-trail section. The authors have tried to simplify the on-trail requirements making meal time easier. The book emphasizes using standard ingrediants (no more expensive store bought freeze-dried stuff) and includes instructions for preserving (dehydrating) your own.

Eat Well

This book has a good amount (it's not War and Peace) of recipes that are tasty and easy for backpacking! Also a chapter or two of good advice concerning food in general...how to pack it, what kinds of things work, making your own dried foods, etc. Each meal has a chapter, like Breakfast, Lunch, whatever...there are no-cook things, all the way to fresh baked bread on the trail and pizza. Yum! (well no I haven't done the pizza or bread but I'm going to try it since they sound so good! And easy too)

About the Author
Charles Detwiler is a Pennsylvania German boy who grew up loving nature and spending many enjoyable hours in it long before studying it formally. His doctoral studies at Cornell and post-graduate work at Cambridge University focused on gene fine structure using the common vinegar fly, Drosophila melanogaster, as a model system. His Christian faith has strongly informed and enriched his study of the living world.

Pretty darn good textbook

I took this class online with Liberty University. First, I want to recommend to everyone who is considering the same course TAKE THE 16 WEEK COURSE!!!! Trust me! haha I did the 8 weeks and I had even less of a life than usual those 8 weeks.

Ok on to the book. For a 600 page textbook on a subject that I do not particularly care for, this was very well written. The authors do a pretty good job of breaking it down into laymen's terms. I will admit that I still felt like I was reading gibberish half the time, but literally only half the time. Once we started studying things that were bigger it started to make more sense and stuff I learned in the previous gibberish chapters applied to stuff later in the course and it all (kind of, sort of) started to make sense.

The authors also do a great job of interjecting personality into their writing. It really made the reading waaaay more enjoyable because of it. The best part is that is really helps add to a Christian Worldview and scripture is referenced throughout the textbook.

Difficult Book

Unlike the previous reviewer, I found this book very difficult to read. The author tries to find humor which leads the reader off track. Some of the biology facts are lost in the sea of biblical connection. If you are trying to learn about biology without confusion this is not your book. If you are trying to find a biblical link to biology then this may be your choice.

Life by Design is a wonderful Biology text with a biblical perspective. The concepts presented are scientifically and biblically based. I would highly recommend this text.
