A Valuable Insight into the World of 381 AD

This book not only provides a translation of the surviving reports by Egeria of her travels to her fellow nuns at home in Spain but contains a commentary on the context of her travels, other contempraneous sources and an analysis of her descriptions both of the lands visited and on her accounts of contemporaneous liturgy. Egeria travelled to the Holy Land and Egypt from about 381 to 384 AD. Her accounts are a welcome antidote to modern "scholarship" suggesting that the New Testament statements of fact and the location of events are somehow recent inventions. There are also surprises. Egeria relates as if it were commonplace that she was escorted at times by detachments of the Roman Army. She also describes a liturgy of mind=blowing length and complexity but which still resonates with the modern Catholic litiurgy.

Surprising Find!

During my research on the Christian sites of the Holy Land, the name "Egeria" surfaced. I located this book on Amazon and when it arrived, I found it to have a wealth of information. This pilgrim kept a detailed diary which she sent to her "Sisters." She is very specific about the sites and liturgies of the Holy Land. Any one looking to learn more about the spiritual devotion in the Holy Land will enjoy this book. Since her diaries were lost, this partial account is all that exists and it is fascinating to read. Further research links her to St. Sylvia.

About the Author
Marcia Bartusiak is the author of Thursday’s Universe, Through a Universe Darkly, and Einstein’s Unfinished Symphony. Seeing the past and present in the heavens

Back during my undergraduate days, one of the most interesting courses that I took was the history of astronomy, and I wish this book had been available. While that course was very good at introducing the different ways in which the universe was perceived and conceived through the different cultures and periods of history, we were often reading second-hand or third-hand accounts. So much of education these days seems to consist of second-hand and third-hand analyses and retellings, working on the assumption that the original texts are too difficult, too arcane, or too 'something' to be useful and understood. Sometimes this might be true; however, making allowances for translation from different languages, I still believe, as obviously the author of this text does, that there is much to be gained by reading the actual words of scientists and philosophers themselves as they first formulated and wrote down their ideas.

This is a text of excerpts from primary documents that have had significant influence in the direction of astronomy and astrophysics in particular, and science and philosophy more generally. These are grouped into eight broad categories: The Ancient Sky, Revolutions, Taking Measure, Touching the Heavens, Einsteinian Cosmos, The Milky Way and Beyond, New Eyes, New Universe, and Accelerating Outward. These each include a half-dozen to a dozen different documents.

Bartusiak introduces each document with a brief essay that sets context both in general history as well as the progress of science, and discusses the importance and influence of the documents for later developments. The groupings are not set in stone, but can be useful: 'The essays introducing each moment of discovery were written to stand alone, inviting the reader to peruse his or her interests in no particular order. Yet it can be profitable to read the sections in sequence to perceive how the questions that observers asked of the heavens evolved over time.'

Some of the readings are heavy going. 'Many of the papers, particularly those from the modern era, are hardly narrative literature. The mathematics can often be unwieldy and the issues fairly complex.' Despite this, astronomy remains one of the more popular and captivating of the sciences, and Bartusiak has made a concession to the more general reader by simplifying some of the papers, omitting detail that might be of interest to professionals, but serve to cloud the view for the more general reader.

This is a great volume for those who are interested in astronomy, the history of science, or cosmological development more generally - particularly the early part, when philosophy and science were not so separate as they are today, general readers may find a great deal of insight and interest.

An Amazing, Wonderful Book

This book is a masterpiece! It presents excerpts from 100 seminal works from the ancient Greeks to Newton, to Einstein, and up to the last decade. Many of the excerpts are only a couple of pages long, and most or all of the math has been removed. Each group of excerpts are preceded by a short, concise piece written by the author that sets the stage for that series. Amazing! This book brings you into the discovery process. You can read pieces of the early papers on quasars, and sense the incredulity at these amazing objects. You can read Einstein work around the mass-energy equivalence, but not quite get to E=MC^^2. You'll read how Fred Hoyle, proponent of the Steady State Universe, inadvertently coined the term for the "other side" of the debate with "Big Bang." This book is full of gems. Because each section is so short, you won't have to wade far down a tunnel of complex notions--instead you'll get instant gratification. It makes for a great read when you only have a few minutes because you can follow one thread to its conclusion. Wow. If you have any interest in astronomy or cosmology this book is simply a must read!

Brilliant, but get the print edition

My background is one of having done a Masters in Astronomy "for fun" about a decade ago. I have never worked in the field. Nor do I have any affiliation whatsoever with the author or publisher.

I'm only a few chapters in but the concept is brilliant, the author's execution so far is masterful. But do not buy the Kindle edition especially if you're using Kindle On PC which at the time of writing this review will not allow you to zoom into pictures, making it an excercise in frustration to follow the papers. If you've made that mistake find a decent screen magnifier. The pictures are very low res to begin with though, so that's disappointing. None of that takes away from this book. It should be the sort of thing that students get introduced to in high school if they elect to do Astronomy. I cannot speak highly enough of the author of this book. Her newer book "The Day We Found the Universe" is also an excellent one - I listened to the audio version.

Our kids used this in school in the section about rock science. It is a relatively short, but useful book, with lots of good graphics. Recommend, and if you are patient, can usually get a quality used version plus shipping for less than $10.

Great listen for French learners

I got this to help improve my listening skills. Be warned, the narrator speaks in VERY fast French. I could only follow it because I know the story pretty well--that was the point.

Overall, a pretty good narration, though the guy makes half the characters have lisps. A bit off-putting.

I'm quite amazed at how bad this book is. I have the sister book, Digital Lighting and Rendering, and that book is excellent. The author of this book has apparently written "the" book on Lightwave. And Digital Cinematography and Directing has gotten a lot of good reviews. And some bad ones. Pay attention to the bad reviews (like I wish I had).

This book is quite short - 225 pages. And literally half of the book is comprised of half-page-sized illustrations. That brings the text down to about 112 pages. Then subtract the one-page introduction to each chapter of the twelve chapters, and the half-page wrap-up, and you are down to about 94 pages of text (trust me - I am not exaggerating). That would be a very few pages for any author to cover the subject. And this author doesn't. It is one of the strangest reading experiences that I have ever had. The author can go on for several pages without really saying anything about the subject. One reviewer said that reading this book was like reading a magazine. I found reading this book more like reading a brochure about a book on Digital Cinematography. The author makes statements like "you are lucky because you are working in a 3D program and can do whatever you want. You don't have to pay actors our be bound by adverse lighting conditions, unions, etc." Or "you are the director. Take charge of your project. A confident digital director is always in charge ..." This book goes on like that forever, but never gets around to imparting any real information. Bizarre.

And about the illustrations - they are badly lit, badly textured, badly posed Poser renders. I have nothing against Poser - I own it - but this is really bad Poser. For example, for an illustration of a group shot shown from the top view, the author has obviously copied and pasted a Poser figure six times - without even bothering to change the pose or clothing - and placed it in a random, nonsensical grouping so that he can illustrate a camera set-up. That illustration takes up half a page (they all do). Then when he makes a statement about visiting a library to find more books on the subject of cinematography, you are directed to another half-page illustration of a screenshot of 3D modeled books!

The only thing that I can figure is that New Riders decided that they needed a Digital Cinematography book for their Digital series and made it as fast and as cheaply, and as carelessly, as possible. Do yourself a favor - don't buy it! As I am always short of shelf space - this book may actually hit the dumpster!

Nothing outstanding - not so "digital" really

Sure it's a nice book to have, although for the price it's paperback and quite thin. The problem is it's just another average book on directing. There's a lot about storyboards, continuity, camera angles, CU shots, Med shots, character staging, headroom. Did I learn anything unique to animation? No. Did I learn anything new? NO.
Except for the digital and animated nature of the images, there is only maybe 1 chapter (10 pages) that is purely related to digital as in 3d animation, and that is about resolutions, compression, and rendering. Wow! -640x480! NTSC! 16:9! I learned that all in school and on the web.
Save your money.

Based on other reviews I was expecting much more than I got. Ok,lets say, maybe it would be good for beginners, but as a mid level 3d artist I found it pretty much a worthless. The material consist of low tech Poser type scenes, with only a briefest overview of lighting, nothing about textures and surfaces, and the stuff on cameras is so basic one can figure it out with a month of Bryce use. Don't be fooled by the cover - this is strictly 101 stuff.
