Our school library can't keep it on the shelf!

Our elementary school library has over 11,000 books on its shelves, and I can't seem to keep this book on the shelf --- ever! I purchased two copies, and the students have already lined up to reserve their place for the book. It even has the "spillover effect" of making the earlier editions (2008, 2007, 2006, etc.) almost as popular!

I suppose I should buy one more copy!

A Modern Classic of the Faith

There are a few books that I consider "most important" in my life. The Bible is first. After that, the list is very short, and includes "The Practice of the Presence of God" (the teachings of Brother Lawrence) and a couple of others. This book - "What Is The Point?" by Misty Edwards - is now on that list. If you're already a Christian and want to develop a new and deeper level of understanding of Jesus and the heart of God, read this book. --Bob Young

A book for the pilgrimage.

What is The Point? is a book for the pilgrimage. This book is not talking about a faith that we shine up and put in a display case to look nice, one that we clean up once in while when it gets visibly dusty and one that people admire and remark about how successfully we maintain our Christianity... No, this book is about a living faith, about loving the One who Lives, the Lord who is more Alive than we can ever comprehend, and who desires us to love Him with a living, growing love, the way He loves us.

What is The Point? is one of the nest books I have read this year. It is so good that I have a hard time reviewing it... I just want to highly recommend it.
At this point in my life, What is The Point pressed one main truth into my heart over and over as I read, the Truth of Revelation 2:4, 5. Even as a Born Again Christian, as a soul who has been washed in the precious saving blood of my Lord, my passion for God can fade if I let it.
If I begin consuming the world's delicacies, I will lose my taste for the Bread of Heaven.
I will get distracted by temporal things that seem so important, and aren't at all.
I will lose my joy in Jesus.
Over and over, I need to be called back to Him, my first Love.
And I can return, and be filled again with His love, and my Love for Him will be strengthened and restored.

What is the Point may seem like a small book, but it is solid, and I know that when I re-read this book, in seven months or in a year, there will be another lesson that my heart needs to learn, and the words in this book will help me.

Unforgettable!

I actually picked up Men Against the Sea expecting a mundane but entertaining sea story. It started off innocently enough until the unlucky crew was sentenced to their watery fate. Then the book suddenly plunged into turbo mode. Now, for an authour to write such a long book about the adventures of 18 men on one small boat and not skip a beat is remarkable.
Captain Bligh establishes his presence on the vessel with an iron grip. His leadership skills and confidence are quite extrodinary as he takes control of boat. One cannot help but feel for the crew as they struggle against all odds. Men Against the Sea is one of those stories that swipes the reader right of their comfy couch and throws them head-first into the raging ocean. The writers describe the hunger and thirst of the men so convicingly that I actually had to grab a bite myself or starve with them! The storms and squalls are believably violent and the Island natives frightfully savage.
It is really a great adventure story. The book manages to surpass its predecessor, Mutiny on the Bounty, by leaps and bounds. From rationing food barely sufficient for one man amongst 18 hungry seamen, too eating raw fish, the crew, lead by their relentless captain, are determined to survive. You will no doubt find yourself cheering at their victories and subsequently mourning their defeats.
What makes the read even more enjoyable is the realization that it is basically a true story. Man against Nature! Trully a book not easily forgotten. It has been 4 years since I read the book and it is still imprinted in by mind.
Read it for yourself. Such books makes being an avid reader so much fun!

A Tightly Written & Exciting Sea Story

It was a hot summer day, and I was in the mood for a sea story. I luckily picked up MEN AGAINST THE SEA and quickly became engrossed. Where the prequel, MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY, was a story of a mutiny, this one was one of the best men against the elements stories ever penned. We see a very different Captain Bligh, whose temper still flares up from time to time, but who this time is successful in managing a small crew of men in an open boat over 3,000 miles from the site of the mutiny to Timor, which is today part of Indonesia.
Fletcher Christian and his mutineers allow Bligh and his loyalists no guns, three cutlasses, a small medical kit, and a pitiful store of water and victuals. Their boat must skirt all inhabited islands because they had no gifts to give to the natives -- which in the islands at that time meant that they were risking attack every time. Their water supply came from rainstorms and occasional landings for food. They had no gear for fishing. All they had to go on were Bligh's knowledge and guts.
I actually prefer this book to MUTINY and now eagerly look forward to seeing if PITCAIRN'S ISLAND, the third volume in the trilogy, is as good.

The Cleansing Influence of Adversity

Men Against the Sea is the fictionalized second book in the Bounty Trilogy. Mutiny on the Bounty recounts the tale of the voyage of the H.M.S. Bounty from England to Tahiti and a little way back, the mutiny, and the subsequent events that affect those of the Bounty's crew who remain on Tahiti. When last seen in that book, Captain William Bligh is cast adrift far from land in a small vessel overladen with 18 other loyal men and about 7 to 8 inches of freeboard above a flat sea. Practically speaking, their chances are slim.
Men Against the Sea begins with the mutiny and describes what happens to Captain Bligh and those he commands as they make their way eventually to the Dutch settlement of Batavia in the Dutch East Indies. Along the way, Captain Bligh and his men traverse around 3,600 miles in their fragile vessel while suffering many horrors including attacks from the native people, lack of sleep, storms, bailing for their lives, cold, thirst, too much sun, and hunger. The authors make a good decision in choosing to have the ship's surgeon serve as the narrator of this saga. This perspective made it possible for the book to include his physical descriptions of the deprivations of the Bounty's abandoned crew to help make the story more compelling. In the true spirit of a story about English tars, there is a considerable discussion of how the starvation the men experienced affected their intestinal tracts.
Captain Bligh comes across very poorly in Mutiny on the Bounty. The opposite occurs in Men Against the Sea. His leadership is one of the great accomplishments of seamanship of all time. Throughout the troubled voyage to the first landing at the Dutch settlement on Timor, Captain Bligh only lost one man. Captain Bligh also comes across as a brave, worthy, and dedicated sailor who is more than willing to share the deprivations of his men. In one stretch, he mans the tiller for 36 straight hours despite being exhausted. At the same time, even the most querulous of the crew usually keep their silence.
But the men are only human after all. Someone steals two pounds of pork. Another shipmate sent to capture birds is overcome by the need to eat them, and spoils the hunting for everyone. In their weakened state, they miss many wonderful chances for food. When they reach civilization and begin to recover from their privations, complaining quickly returns.
My test of how well written such an adventure tale is that I often felt like I was in the boat struggling with them. The main weakness of the book is that it skips many days on end, when the circumstances were at their most dire such as during unending days of storms. By doing this, the reader is denied the chance to have the full horror of the crossing bear down more strongly.
Most of the weaknesses of Mutiny on the Bounty are overcome in Men Against the Sea. So if you found that work unappealing, give this one a chance. It has many of the qualities of great survival and adventure books.
After you finish this remarkable tale, I suggest you think about the ways that adversity brings out the best in you. How can you do as well when times and circumstance are not adverse?
Squarely face the challenge, with confidence that success will follow!

Based on actual events, this latest offering from the accomplished Cooney (The Face on the Milk Carton; Driver's Ed) is a gripping and thought-provoking account of the 1704 Indian raid on the English settlement of Deerfield, Mass. After their village is burned and many of its residents killed, Mercy and more than 100 other settlers are taken prisoner by the Kahnawake Mohawk, who have been converted to Catholicism by the French. Some of the novel's most riveting chapters describe the difficult winter trek that takes them 300 miles north to Canada, where Mercy settles into life in a traditional Indian village near Montreal. Uncertain whether she will be adopted by the Mohawk who captured her or whether the English will pay the ransom that would allow her to return to Massachusetts, Mercy struggles to balance loyalty to her own family and traditions with a growing appreciation for the Kahnawake way of life. Just how much her perspective broadens can be measured by the fact that, in addition to adopting many Indian ways, Mercy can find something sacred and comforting in the Catholic mass a rite she was raised to believe led straight to eternal damnation. Portrayed mostly as rigid, angry and dogmatic, the Puritans contrast poorly with the generally kind and commonsensical Indians, and Mercy's final choice is thus compelling. Though at times this account reads like the MTV version of the events (e.g., glancing over such important events as the death of Mercy's Indian father), the immediacy of Mercy's dilemma comes through despite its historical distance. Gr 6-8-The drama of history unfolds in this gripping tale based on the actual destruction of Deerfield, MA, in February, 1704. In a surprise attack, Mohawk Indians entered the town, burned it, and took captives with them on a 300-mile march to Canada. This is 11-year-old Mercy Carter's story. Accustomed to caring for her younger siblings, she becomes the mother figure for several of the children on the long and harsh journey. Although she waits to be ransomed, when the opportunity arises more than a year after her capture, she refuses to go back. Cooney artfully combines the intense drama of the situation with historical details of the period and the Indian culture. The conflict between the English Puritans from Deerfield and the French Catholics is also well depicted. However, although Mercy is an intriguing, feisty girl, her maturity is often unrealistic. She never panics; she always thinks ahead and projects the outcome of her actions. Cooney carefully draws her other characters to show myriad reactions to the capture, including the rebellious Ruth and others who are too devastated by their losses to care about what happens to them. It is unfortunate that only cursory mention is made of the Indians' underlying plight against the invading white man that led to such horrifying attacks. Still, there is a great deal in this engrossing tale to recommend it.

Gr. 6-10. In 1704, the height of the French and Indian War, Mohawk Indians attack 11-year-old Mercy Carter's home in Deerfield, Massachusetts. Forcibly led by their attackers, Mercy and the other surviving settlers set off on a perilous 300-mile trip to Canada, where the "English" will be ransomed, sold, or adopted by French and Indian families. On arrival, Mercy is sent to live with a Mohawk family, and her new life begins as an adopted Indian daughter. She ultimately becomes so assimilated that she chooses not to return to Deerfield when ransom is finally offered. Filled with cultural and historical detail, the third-person narrative reflects the settlers' fearful and prejudiced views of their captors, which seem historically accurate but may offend modern readers. Repeated references to scalping are also somewhat sensationalized. But, as Mercy wavers between her birth culture and her adopted one, she raises excellent questions about notions of "savagery" that will make this vivid, dramatic novel an excellent discussion book. Native American Raid on Old Deerfield Village with Captives Taken on Forced March

Well written & I've read a lot of books about children captured by Native Americans since I was in 4th grade (many years ago). I recommend this book for adults even though it was written for older children, When I lived in Mass. from 1957 to 1966, I visited Old Deerfield Village a number of times. Having done so, helped me better visualize the Native American attack on the community is described. In addition, being familiar with the topography & the Berkshire Mountains gave be a better understanding of the forced journey the prisoners endured. How any of them survived is truly amazing; but, then, they did not live with central heating, etc. as we do today.

Valuable book for young teens

This is a young adult book that I read as a mentor for a group of young teenage girls. It is compelling in its complex yet clear examination of themes of family, loyalty, religion, duty, diversity of cultures, importance of the development of one's own identity; all told within a simple story and with very clear and compelling writing. The world a lot of teenagers live in today is very murky as to these themes and it is refreshing to find the themes clearly delineated and viewed in a world where things are very different from, yet much the same as, today's world. I wish all of today's teenagers had to read this book.

It was easy to get into this book because Mercy Carter was an ancestor of mine (her brother John Carter was my sixth great grandfather) because it was personal. This book seems perfectly suited to young female readers (ages 10-16)who would like to read about a girl their age caught in a traumatic and tragic situation. Very sensitive readers may not like the descriptions of the deaths of Mercy's stepmother and some of her siblings and would need guidance. However, they will admire Mercy's courage, her own sensitivity and her eventual independence. It seems the Native Americans are treated fairly in this account. It's a good read for parent and child as it sets the stage for discussion about the role of Indians in our early colonial history.
