About the Author

William Davis- Professor Davis wrote his first program in 1967, back in the days when the title "hacker" was considered a compliment. In 1971, he joined the faculty at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where he began as a teacher who writes and evolved into a writer who teaches. Professor Davis is a very successful author whose previously published texts include Computing Fundamentals: Concepts, Systems Analysis and Design, Productivity Tools, and The NECEN Voyage.

John "Skip" Benamati- Dr. Benamati joined IBM in 1994 as a database administrator, and left as a corporate information technology (IT) consultant in 1994 to pursue his dream of sharing his real-world experience with students at the college level. With a Master's in Computer Science (Marist College, 1987) and Doctorate in Philosophy (Univ. of Kentucky, 1997), he joined Miami University's MIS department as an assistant professor in 1997. The focus of his doctoral and ongoing research is IT change and its effect on IT management. Dr. Benamati has published articles about IT change and e-commerce in numerous journals, and he continues to provide consulting services.

good introductory discussion

The authors have put together a primer on explaining e-commerce. The ideal audience for this book appears to be an IT manager or perhaps a programmer. The discussion is mostly at a level above actual programming. You don't need working knowledge of JavaScript, HTML, Java, web servers or other related topics.

The book delves into key ideas of organising a web service, such as what is an n-tier application. Cryptography also gets good coverage. A qualitative explanation is given of the Public Key Infrastructure and Certificate Authorities, without descending into the maths of number theory.

Malware is also covered. Though, given its increasing severity, perhaps a more extensive analysis may have been warranted.

Overall, the book places all these topics in the context of building and running a large e-commerce service. If you do wish to go in this direction, the book is a good start. Though you will certainly need more specialised texts later.

This multi-volume set of Ibsen's work, edited and compiled by Chicago/Evanston author Rick Davis is a little masterpiece.
The new adaptations are marvelous, and Mr. Davis' commentaries show us how Ibsen is a master crafsperson, and how his work may be best contrasted with Strindberg -- who is anything but a master editor and foundation layer.
I think Mr. Davis shows us how important precision and planning can be to the writing process. Therefore I think this book is a must have for screenwriters, as well as fiction-writers -- not to mention playrights.

Great book, but not perfect or ideal for every purpose

This is a solid introduction to the foundations (and not just the basics) of differential geometry. The author is rather laconic, and the book requires one to work through it, rather than read it. It presupposes firm grasp of point-set topology, including paracompactness and normality. The basics (Inverse and Implicit Function Theorems, Frobenius Theorem, orientation, and rudiments of de Rham cohomology) are covered in about 100 pages (Chapters 1, 2, and 4). This is not really suitable for an undergraduate course in differential geometry, but is great for a graduate course.

Chapter 3, 5, and 6 (self-contained introductions to Lie Groups, Sheaf Theory, and Hodge Theory, all from a geometric viewpoint) are a really nice feature. The book can't be covered in one semester, but these chapters are great for selft-study. In fact, the organization of Chapter 5 is more suitable for self-study than for being taught in class (lots of theory developed first, with all applications delayed until the end). The real jewel of the book is Chapter 6, a very clean introduction to Hodge Theory, with immediate applications.

The main drawback of the book in my view is that the author avoids vector bundles like the plague. These could have been very nicely incorporated into the book. No mention is made of Mayer-Vietoris or Kunneth formula, even though the former follows easily from the section on cochain complexes in Chapter 5 and the latter with some effort from Chapter 6. There is no mention of manifolds with boundary either, except as regular domains of manifolds for the purpose of Stokes Theorem.

The organization of the book could have been better as well. In particular, the section on cochain complexes could have been incorporated in the rather short de Rham Cohomology Chapter 4, so that MV could have been proved and used to compute the cohomology of spheres (beyond the circle). Some subsections, including in Chapter 1, appear out of order to me. There is a shortage of exercises in my view. Some of the author's notation (for tangent spaces, tangent bundles) is rather non-standard.

However, all-in-all, I can't think of a better differential geometry text for a graduate course. Spivak and Lee are quite wordy and do not have the same breadth. Either book would be preferable to Warner for an undergraduate course though. The price is a relative bargain too.

A good book if you have some background

This book is a good introduction to manifolds and lie groups.
Still if you dont have any background ,this is not the book to start with.The first chapter is about the basics of manifolds:vector fields,lie brackts,flows on manifolds and more,
this chapter can help one alot as a second book on the subject.
The second chapter is about tensors, this introduction can be very hard for someone who didnt met the notion of tensors ,since the book tends to take a very general line with out down to earth examples.the 3ed chapter is about lie groups.It is avery good introduction ,to my point of view ,one of the best there is.
The 4th chapter is about integration on manifolds and is very good too.Chapters 5and6 are about De Rham cohomology theory and the hodge theorem.
If you have some knowledge on all the above subjects this book can serve as a very good overview on the subject.

Brief, vast and deep introduction to manifolds

This concise book is invaluable and a true reference to start with manifolds. It concentrates a broad amount of advanced topics in only 250 pages: atlas and manifolds,inmersed and imbedded submanifolds, Frobenius theorem on completely integrable tangent subbundles (made with exterior forms and also with vector fields), a solid (though somewhat idyosincratic) introduction to Lie groups, Stoke's theorem, de Rham theorem on cohomology (made with sheafs) and an introduction to harmonic forms and Hodge theory (a topic covered in an English textbook for the first time). Chapters one and two are particularly dry. People complain saying it's a hard-to-read book. But for beginners no book on manifolds is easy. I particularly found difficult to study this one (it was many years ago, on its Scott, Foresman and Company first edition, 1971). I was acquainted with Singer-Thorpe's Lecture Notes on Elementary Topology and Geometry, Willmore's An Introduction to Differentiable Geometry and Spivak's Calculus on Manifolds, but I had to work very hard to progress along Warner's dense and detailed pages, written with little attention to sources, history or applications. However, this work wonderfully dealt with so many interesting and foundational material! and it covered such a wide range of information with much accuracy! At that time, there were only a handful of books in the same spirit that Warner's: Differentiable Manifolds by Aulander-MacKenzie, Differentiable Manifolds by S. T. Hu and Tensor Analysis on Manifolds by Bishop-Goldberg. Both Hu's and Warner's helped to link a typical course on curves and surfaces with advanced books on Geometry or Topology, like Kobayashi-Nomizu's Foundations of Differential Geometry, Bishop-Crittenden's Geometry of Manifolds, Sternberg's Differential Geometry or Hirsch's Differential Topology. Nowadays there are a host of books on manifolds, some less demanding than Warner's, (f. ex. Boothby's An Introduction to Differentiable manifolds and Riemannian Geometry), some much more sophisticated (f. ex. Nicolaescu's Lectures on the Geometry of Manifolds). A very good alternative is Differentiable Manifolds by L. Conlon. Anyway, I think that several good books are better than one, and one should add a companyon to Warner's in order to get complementary information on complex manifolds, Lie groups, homogeneous spaces, bundles and connections (gauge theory!), characteristic classes on so on. For that, Poor's Differential Geometric Structures is very good indeed. Of course, Spivak's "A Comprehensive Introduction to Differential Geometry (vol. 1) complements Warner's particularly well.

About the Author
Dr Rudolf Otto (1869 - 1937) was a German theologian, philosopher, and historian of religion. He taught at the Universities of Gottingen and Breslau, then settled in Marburg in 1917. His theories on religion were influenced by his journeys to Africa and Asia to study non-Christian faiths and by the writings of Immanuel Kant and Friedrich Schleiermacher. In The Idea of the Holy (1917), Otto coined the term numinousA" to designate the nonrational element of religious experience - the awe, fascination, and blissful exultation inspired by the perception of the divine. His other books include Mysticism East and West (1926) and India's Religion of Grace and Christianity (1930).

David Nahmani (Valley Village, CA) co-produced a song on the last Pop Will Eat Itself album, and worked with hit producer Toby Gad (Alicia Keys, Beyoncé, Robin Thicke, Fergie). He co-wrote and co-produced songs for the MTV series The Real World and Undressed. He engineered and produced three classical albums on Decca Records/BMG for the Bernard Calmel Orchestra in Paris, France; released tracks and remixes on Cleopatra Records; and, using Logic Pro, has programmed XF MIDI songs for Yamaha. David is the director of the Los Angeles Logic Pro User Group and publisher of LogicProHelp.com. As an Apple-certified trainer, he conducts Logic workshops out of his Los Angeles training center. NOTHING beats Apple Pro training

I've been on logic since version 3 (yikes!). I use all kinds of training, including MacProVideo as reference for particular items. But nothing comes close to the methodical comprehensive approach of peachpit's pro training books. And I always make it a point to go through their entire training whenever there's a major version of logic (or FCP) released. There are a lot of training programs/videos/books out there that you can learn a lot of tricks from. But nothing comes close when it comes to comprehensive training.

Even as an old time avid user of Logic, I went through this entire book from the beginning and once again learned so much about workflow and various options to allow me to work faster and more intuitively. Highly recommended for beginners and professionals alike.

Structured learning

Didn't think twice when I bought this one, as I had good experience from the David's preceding book about Logic Pro 9. I had some worries, though, that much of the information would be redundant. My worries were needless; the new book primarily focuses on all the new functionality provided with Pro X. This being said, it's still a book that covers/brings all the basic knowledge you need to have to work with Logic. These training books are certified by Apple, so they hold a high quality. I specifically like the consistent step-by-step approach. Everything is explained in detail and illustrated by both pictures and easy-to-follow guidelines. The book comes with comprehensive audio and project material, which is great when you need to be hands-on. I bought the ebook/ iPad Kindle version, so had to download the files from the publisher's web site. It went easy and smooth. All in all, I can only recommend this book. It covers all main aspects of music creation with Logic Pro X, without being cluttered or diving too much into depth. It keeps a good balance between essential information and information for general understanding. Lastly, I need to say that this is not for everyone. If you don't wish to read 500 pages while doing your hands-on exercises, I would recommend to use video-based tutorial services like those provided by macProVideo.com instead. They're really great too!

I've only gone through the first few chapters but learned so much. I am a beginner with Logic so this was exactly what I needed. I guess this is why it is the Apple Certified Method.

The method is lab based so it's like being in a classroom only without the instructor.

This is the drunken ramblings from some stoned hippy chick who has been passed around more than the community bong. Seriously ridiculous advice from someone who can't even seem to compose a coherent thought. Clearly self published as nobody sane would put their name on this. Only later after searching google in disbelief at how horrible this was did I learn the history of the failed author who fled the US to pimp out her daughter in Holland.

She tells it like it is and the book is incredibly motivating to make something of your life. I may not agree with everything in the book - especially when it comes to religion, but I would recommend you read it. Miki is someone that constantly challenges me to be the best in life, and I am grateful that she has written this book,.

Best Book I've Found On MIDI

This book is thin and concise, I have read many books on MIDI and have found none to be as useful as this and has my full recommendation.

I was prompted to write a review due the poor and inaccurate reviews that say it is out dated. Sure maybe buying a book about Microsoft operating system that is 10 years old would be considered out dated but that is far from the case here.

I challenge anyone to find a more concise book explaining MIDI anywhere. If you have read another MIDI book better than this, I most likely have read it and disagree with you! All the info in this book applies to working with MIDI in this year 2005 in any audio work station today or your Akai MPC or whatever.

As far as the reviewer that said their pages were stuck together, I am sorry, mine was not like that and you just got a bad copy.

Somewhat outdated

This book was published in 1987 and reprinted in 1994. The book does recognize that it is really when the MIDI-instruments are connected to a computer that MIDI takes on its real power, but only 10% of the book talks about MIDI and computers. The chapter on computer tells you about the choice between PC, MAC, Atrari and Commodore, and explains in length what a CD-rom is, and why we need it (not all programs fit on a floppy disk...) Sequencer program are mentioned, but barely so.

The book does a fair job in explaining the MIDI standard and how it works, but it does not help me at all when I want to get started in connecting the components to my PC. I do think this was an excellent book in 1987, but digital music has moved on a long way since then.

MIDI On The Mind

As a practicing musician for 45 years, and after reading quite a few books on the subject of MIDI, this book is another typical MIDI book. It tells of how and why it was developed. It's always good to know the roots of everything one studies but this does not help one understand how to make your keyboard tell your guitar effects processor to change to patch #3, your vocal effects processor to switch to patch #49 and use a command to raise the reverb level to a certain point at a precise millisecond, or maybe message,(talk), to another keyboard in the MIDI chain and tell it to do whatever you want, all at the same instant. MIDI is truly a beast worth utilizing, and works quite well, for some. But I wouldn't trust it with my life. All of these MIDI books give the history and theory of MIDI. Every MIDI object has its own method of giving a midi command or recieving one. This and every other book I've read on the subject of MIDI is just as this one. One you should have seen if the library had. Gerald Somers ggp.

Blind Melon is my favorite band, and this book tells the whole story. From the beginning to the tragic end of Shannon Hoon's life. The interviews are interesting & the history of the band is complete. A great read for anyone who loves music.

I opened this book and couldn't put it down until I finished it. It truly does tell the story of Shannon Hoon and Blind Melon, and tells it in the best possibly way; from the mouths of the people that lived it. The story is told in a series of quotes from band members, record company people, family and friends obtained through interviews by the author. And in the case of Hoon, the quotes were taken from published interviews from the 90's. There could no be no purer way for this story to be told. The interviewees were candid and open; they seemed to hold nothing back. Their words and stories spoke so clearly of those times and what Shannon Hoon meant to them that I truly felt that I got to know him and his tendencies through this book. I felt as if I truly had spent those hours not reading a book, but spending time with these people and their friend Shannon. Which made for emotional results even though I knew the end to this story. When the fateful end of Shannon Hoon's life came in this book I immediately felt the loss of him. My heart broke, and I missed him. Just from reading a book 13 and a half years after the event. I do not have the book in front of me as I review it, but someone in there said something along the lines of "everyone who met him thought Shannon was their best friend" and it was easy to see that.

As Shannon Hoon had the most powerful personality of the subjects in the book, and people seemed to speak most about their relationship with him, it is easy to focus on him. But through the honesty of Rogers Stevens, Christopher Thorn, Brad Smith, and Glen Graham you felt closer to them as well. They give valuable details of life in the band Blind Melon, everything from stories from the road to recollections of recording and some song meanings. A casual rock and roll fan will see from this book that Blind Melon was a band, and not just Shannon Hoon.

Your heart really goes out to the people that were close to Shannon Hoon. People whose lives were touched very deeply for knowing him, and who had to deal with the pain of losing him. I extend gratitude to those willing to speak about those times for this project, and credit to the author for the Shannon Hoon quotes he chose to give the singer's perspective of that time in his life with his band. Strongest recommendation for anyone that is a fan of 90's music, and this is a flat out must read for any Blind Melon fan.
