Student-oriented, not teacher-oriented

I purchased this book because it is one of the very few written about citing textual evidence. As a teacher, I was looking for best practices for teaching. This book is oriented toward students who want to successfully cite text evidence, and perhaps it is helpful for that scenario. It is not at all what I was looking for.

About the Author
W. S. Merwin, poet, translator, and environmental activist, is one of the most widely read--and imitated--poets in America. The son of a Presbyterian minister, whom he began writing hymns for at the age of five, Merwin went to Europe as a young man and developed a love of languages that led to work as a literary translator. Over the years his poetic voice has moved from the more formal and medieval--influenced somewhat by Robert Graves and the medieval
poetry he was then translating--to a more distinctly American voice, following his two years in Boston where he got to know Robert Lowell, Sylvia Plath, Ted Hughes, Adrienne Rich, and Donald Hall, all of whom were breaking out of the rhetoric of the 1950s. Merwin’s recent poetry is perhaps his most personal, arising from his deeply held beliefs. He is not only profoundly anti-imperialist, pacifist, and environmentalist but also possessed by an intimate feeling for landscape and language and the ways land and language interflow. His latest poems are densely imagistic and full of an intimate awareness of the natural world.

His first book, A Mask for Janus, was chosen by W. H. Auden in 1952 for the Yale Younger Poets Prize. The Carrier of Ladders received the 1970 Pulitzer Prize. Among his other books of poems are The Drunk in the Furnace, The Moving Target, The Lice, Flower & Hand, The Compass Flower, Feathers from the Hill, Opening the Hand, The Rain in the Trees, Travels, The Vixen, The Lost Upland, Unframed Originals, The Folding Cliffs, The River Sound, The Pupil, a translation of Dante’s Purgatorio the critically lauded translation of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, as well as Present Company, which won the Rebekah Johnson Bobbitt National Prize for Poetry, Migration: Selected Poems 1951-2001, which won the National Book Award, and The Shadow of Sirius, which received the Pulitzer Prize (Merwin's second). A two-volume set, The Collected Poems of W. S. Merwin, was published in May 2013. Merwin's prose includes The Mays of Ventadorn, part of the National Geographic Directions series, The Ends of the Earth (essays), and the memoir Summer Doorways. Recent reissues of his books are The First Four Books of Poems, Spanish Ballads, translations of Jean Follain’s poetry collection Transparence of the World and Antonio Porchia’s Voices, and The Book of Fables, a reissue of (The Miner’s Pale Children and Houses and Travelers). Forthcoming are the poetry collection Before Morning (Copper Canyon, April 2014) and a booklength essay, Unchopping a Tree (Trinity University Press, March 2014).

Merwin was named poetry consultant to the Library of Congress in 1999, along with poets Rita Dove and Louise Glück. He has been honored as laureate of the Struga Poetry Evenings Festival in Macedonia and as recipient of the international Golden Wreath Award, the 2004 Lannan Lifetime Achievement Award, the Pulitzer Prize (twice), the National Book Award, the Tanning Prize, the Bollingen Prize, the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize, and the first Zbigniew Herbert International Literary Award, in 2013. He was appointed U.S. poet laureate in 2010.

Merwin has spent the last thirty years planting nineteen acres with over 800 species of palm, creating a sustainable forest; the property recently became the Merwin Conservancy (http://www.merwinconservancy.org). He lives, writes, and gardens on the island of Maui, in Hawai‘i.

Liz Ward is a professor of art and art history at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, and an artist who works primarily in painting and drawing with an emphasis on works on paper. She received her M.F.A. in painting from the University of Houston and her B.F.A. in printmaking from the University of New Mexico. The art included in W. S. Merwin's Unchopping a Tree is from her series "The Cellular Life of a Tree." She lives in Castroville, Texas.

If the fall was carefully and correctly planned, the chances of anything of the kind happening will have been reduced. Again, much depends upon the size, age, shape, and species of the tree. Still, you will be lucky if you can get through this stage without having to use machinery.

Even in the best of circumstances it is a labor that will make you wish often that you had won the favor of the universe of ants, the empire of mice, or at least a local tribe of squirrels, and could enlist their labors and their talents. But no, they leave you to it. They have learned, with time. This is men’s work.

This short, quick read book is a poetically written story about how one would methodically, delicately and effectively "unchop a tree" - basically put a tree that has been chopped down back together. It is a sweet, short story that leaves you with a smile and wandering thought.

Just what I needed to pass

This study guide was exactly what I needed to pass the certification. I'm not saying my course didn't give me the necessary information, but like this book said, it really helped me to efficiently prepare for the exam.

Here are a couple of points that I really liked about this CNA Study Gudie:
1. It was cheaper than the rest of the "legitimate" study guides...okay, so I am a cheap scape.
2. I loved the number of forms and graphs that helped to organize the information
3. The best part was getting a pretest at the beginning. This really helped me to figure out where I needed to study more.
4. Then there was the two final practice tests at the end. They were pretty close to the real thing, which was nice.

All in all, for the price, this book was exactly what I needed.

Great book...

I finished up my course work a little bit ago and figured I needed a CNA study guide to help me prepare for the test. So, i jumped on Amazon and found a couple of CNA study guide books. Here's what I learned:
1. The official CNA Study Guide was the better of the three
2. CNA Certified Nursing Assistant Exam Cram came in a close second, although a little outdated (2009?)
3. CNA Study Guide: Nurse Assistant Complete Test Prep was good but didn't have as much content as #1 and 2.
4. And I didn't try the rest because they looked really unprofessional.

The official CNA Study Guide in particular did an excellent job of organizing the information and I especially loved its Pretest which helped me to immediately figure out where I needed to work harder. I also liked that they focused on the practical exam portion and did an excellent job of providing the required steps as well as recommendations. The CNA Exam Cram book did this as well...not so much for the others.

Most Recommended CNA Study Guide

At first, I was hesitant to buy this guide since I read a negative review that said it was “unreadable” due to printing issues. However, I found top recommendations all over the internet and from my classmates and decided it had to be good.

I’m not sure what the reviewer saw, but it was absolutely fine. In truth, it was a little unfair and misleading that the poor review reflected on the book and not the printing company – which subsequently was Amazon’s printing company. Plus, compared to the other CNA study guides, this was BY FAR THE BEST…my friends were right.

Unlike other study guides, I was thoroughly impressed with the layout and the presentation of the information. I enjoyed the fact that every chapter started with keywords and phrases for each subject and then moved in a methodical nature through the material. It’s as if I knew what to expect in the next chapter, and really helped me to flip back to important parts of the book.

I also loved their pretest. The purpose of this was to immediately help me figure out where I needed more help. Although these questions seemed to be a little too easy, it was still a good indication of where I was weakest.

Finally, my favorite part to this guide was the practical procedures at the end. With each major practical procedure on each page, it became easy for my study partner and I to practice. She would tell me the required procedure, and I would walk through each step as if I were performing the real test. Although we had our notes, we found there were some key parts that we had just taken for granted, like washing our hands or speaking to the patient as we performed.

False Advertising - useful book, but not at all what it claims

If you bought a $300-ish book titled "Synthesis of Essential Drugs", you'd expect to open it and find a book detailing the synthesis of essential drugs. This is not what you get with this book. The contents of this book are indeed useful, but if you're looking for details on drug synthesis, this is not it.

What it provides: A comprehensive list of WHO essential drugs, a good summary of each "group", the group's metabolic actions, and a good description of the molecular and pharmaceutical differences between them. It also details a single list of precursor substances for each drug, along with (unbalanced and incomplete) chemical equations related to that precursor chain.

What it does not provide: Methods, catalysts, agents, equipment, environment, and dangers of synthesis. So (virtually) no mention of catalysts, no mention of temperature of reaction, no mention of vessels, yields, correctness-checking, etc. THESE are the primary data associated with the synthesis of a drug, and they are essentially nowhere to be found in this book.

Perhaps a title would be "A sketch of a precursor chain for each one of WHO's essential drugs, with detailed notes on their metabolic actions"

A Touching Story

My son and I read this book together because he was supposed to read it for his 6th grade class and he was not interested in it. In the end, we both enjoyed the story. I believe it would be better suited to a fourth or fifth grade student, but the story is touching and really hits home for children of divorce. The story is set up as a series of letters from the boy to Mr. Henshaw, an author. As the boy grows, his letters become more mature and he eventually begins writing in a journal instead of writing letters. The ending is warm and pleasant; although not a typical "happy ending." I would recommend this story to any young person who enjoys realistic fiction or who has experienced a divorce or a feeling of loneliness.

Good Book!

If you want to read a good book you should read dear Mr. Henshaw. It's an AR book and it's a really excellent book to read it's easy and doesn't take a long time to read.
The book dear Mr. Henshaw is about a young boy named Leigh whose dad is a trucker and his dad lives in a trailer park with his dog named Bandit. Leigh lives in a cottage with his mom in Bakersfield, California Leigh is going to a new school and in the beginning of the book he has no friends except the janitor named Mr. Fridley. And he has a problem which is a person who keeps on stealing the good stuff out of his lunch and he tries to catch that person by doing a lot of things like taping his lunch bag together and by putting an alarm system on his lunch bag. All through the book Leigh writes to a famous author and they write back and forth almost every day.
My favorite part was when Leigh saw his Dad and Bandit. I liked the book because it was exciting to read. It will make you never want to stop.
