Trevor Worthington, Duke of Kenbridge, can't trust women. Yet after nearly killing the amnesiac Louisa, he has little choice but to open his home to her. His heart softens to the straggly woman in beggar's garb as he strives to help her regain her memory. As proof of Louisa's scars - both physical and those lurking beneath the surface - come to light, Trevor finds himself more and more drawn to the mysterious woman. However he is hesitant to enter another nightmarish entanglement like his first marriage.

Louisa is all too happy to accept employment in the duke's household, though it quickly becomes apparent she doesn't fit in at all! For starters, she speaks French and has no skills to speak of. Bits and pieces of conflicting memories flash through her mind, lending more confusion to the puzzle of her life. Fortunately the duke proves ever patient with her myriad of mistakes, and Louisa finds herself falling in love with the kind, brooding man. As their budding relationship progresses from improper to scandalous, Louisa's memory begins to return. Dare she tell Trevor the horrible truths of her past? That she belongs to an evil man known only as Macgregor?

It's..... o.k.
By Becca
Let me first start off saying I loved the first book in this series The Sweetest Kiss, and could not wait to read the second book.

However, I did not think this sequel was as good. It was very predictable. I don't think the characters were as developed, and the story seemed rushed in parts to me. I don't think I want to read the third book about Tristan because I have not been able to get into his character from the first two books and I am afraid it will be as predictable. However, I would like to read a book involving Dominic.

That being said, this was a quick enjoyable book, if you want a fast and predictable read. I love that it is a clean romance, and I really like the Worthington brothers. This book however just left me disappointed and wanting more.

Sweet period romance

Very well written sweet romance.
Boy Meets Girl in unexpected circumstances where She has lost her memory.
They are both from different classes in society and he is not read for romance in life due to his issues with the past.
A well written novel where as we move along all conflicts are resolved and one is left with a sweet taste in the mind. The characters are etched out quite well. My compliments to the author.

The Duke University men's basketball team has served as the gold standard in college athletics for well over two decades - and that's all because of the extraordinary impact of Mike Krzyzewski, the highly-respected coach of the Duke squad.

Coach K's reputation as a teacher of young men has transcended his extraordinary success as a coach. The Duke team is always ranked at the top of the college game, year in and year out, but what's truly remarkable about Coach K are his players and the legacy they leave behind: Grant Hill, Shane Battier, Elton Brand, Bobby Hurley, and on and on -- these are not just great basketball players, but individuals who have become true leaders in American society, all thanks in large part to Coach K's leadership.

So how does Coach K do it? In this new book, he reveals his tips, advice, and time-tested guidance on how he coaches and educates his players about life beyond the basketball court.

About the Author
In addition to winning numerous NCAA championships and Coach of the Year awards, Coach K has also been selected to coach the USA men's basketball team at the Summer Olympics in 2008.

From AudioFile
By one of the best college coaches of all time, these lessons are valuable additions to Coach K's other teachings on basketball and life. He's so wise and articulate in these matters that few listeners will pay much attention to his speaking style, which tends to be flat, whether he's reading or speaking extemporaneously. The essays are organized around 40 words or phrases such as commitment, dependability, selflessness, and trust. Though they may sound like overused principles, in Coach K's hands they take on a vibrancy and credibility that is seldom matched in other audios on success. With priceless examples from the worlds of college and professional sports, this is an essential lesson for anyone who influences young people. Read by coach K himself. Worth every penny.
By Leslie Greenwood
Read by Coack K himself, expalins the word, meaning and provides personal examples of it. I've read some of Wooden's books as well as other inspirational books and this one ranks towards the top. I prefer the audio since I'm a slow reader and I can listen to it when I drive to work. It's almost like you are in a personal interview with coach K.

Seeds of Deception: Exposing Industry and Government Lies About the Safety of the Genetically Engineered Foods You're Eating, by Jeffrey

Without knowing it, Americans eat genetically modified (GM) food everyday. While the food and chemical industries claim that GMO food is safe, a considerable amount of evidence shows otherwise. In Seeds of Deception, Jeffrey Smith, a former executive with the leading independent laboratory testing for GM presence in foods, documents these serious health dangers and explains how corporate influence and government collusion have been used to cover them up.

The stories Smith presents read like a mystery novel. Scientists are offered bribes or threatened; evidence is stolen; data withheld or distorted. Government scientists who complain are stripped of responsibilities or fired. The FDA even withheld information from congress after a GM food supplement killed nearly a hundred people and permanently disabled thousands. While Smith was employed by the laboratory he was not allowed to speak on the health dangers or the cover-up. No longer bound by this agreement, Smith now reveals what he knows in this groundbreaking exposé.

Today, food companies sell GM foods that have not undergone safety studies. FDA scientists opposed this, but White House and industry pressure prevailed and the agency's final policy--co-authored by a former Monsanto attorney--denied the risks. The scientists' concerns were made public only after a lawsuit forced the agency to turn over internal documents.

Dan Glickman, former Secretary of Agriculture, describes the government's pro-biotech mindset: "You felt like you were almost an alien, disloyal, by trying to present an open-minded view. . . . So I pretty much spouted the rhetoric. . . . It was written into my speeches."

In Seeds of Deception Smith offers easy-to-understand descriptions of genetic engineering and explains why it can result in serious health problems. This well-documented, pivotal work will show you how to protect yourself and your family.

From Publishers Weekly
Recent news headlines have focused on the disagreement between the U.S. and Europe over genetically modified foods: the U.S. exports them, but the European Union doesn't want to import them, believing their safety remains unproven. Are genetically modified foods safe? Longtime anti-GM foods campaigner Smith presents the "opposing" case. He offers cases where GM produced results that were at best unexpected (increased starch content in potatoes), at worst grotesque (pigs without genitals). He describes how one corporation reportedly tried to bribe Canadian government scientists into approving genetically engineered bovine growth hormones they deemed unsafe; how some scientists have reported their careers were threatened as a result of their refusal to approve certain GM products in the U.S.; and how "conflicts of interest, sloppy science, and industry influence" can distort the approval process. The cases Smith presents are scary and timely, but he explores only one side of the story. Readers looking for a balance consideration of genetically modified foods will want to look elsewhere.

What not to eat - at breatkfast, lunch, or dinner!
By Patty Apostolides
Having read a number of articles and books on genetically engineered foods, I found this book to be very comprehensive and very well written. I highly recommend it if you are interested in your health.

As a biologist who has worked with DNA, and respect it, I place great value on Smith's easy to understand explanation on the genetic engineering process on DNA. Smith has also carefully researched FDA reports and quoted several people in his analysis of GMOs and their impact on society. With methodological precision, his research reveals the close ties of the U.S. government with biotechnology industry in several aspects of GMO production. Even more disturbing is the influence of biotechnology companies such as Monsanto, Novartis, Dow, and DuPont having on the government - they gave more than 3.5 million dollars (from 1995-2000) towards campaign contributions, with 3/4 going to Republicans.

His research also reveals the impact of the genetically modifed amino acid L-tryptophan in 1989-1990 that debilitated thousands of people with EMS, a disease that produces severe muscle pain, and even death. Forty people died from taking this L-tryptophan. This product was never labled that it was genetically modified and the Japanese manufacturer - Showa Denko KK did not use the proper filtration level to remove the impurities. Subsequent from these health risks, the product was removed from shelves.

My favorite quotes from this book came from George Wald, Nobel Laureate in Medicine. He said for genetic engineeering - "The results will be essentially new organisms, self-perpetuating and hence permanent. Once created, they cannot be recalled" and "Up to now, living organisms have evolved very slowly and new forms have had plenty of time to settle in. Now whole proteins will be transposed overnight into wholly new associations, with consequences no one can foretell, either for the host organism, or their neighbors." Those are powerful words and cannot be forgotten.

Read this book. It will change your life. You owe it to yourself and your family.

Everybody's America: Thomas Pynchon, Race, and the Cultures of Postmodernism (Studies in Major Literary Authors), by David Witzling

Everybody’s America reassesses Pynchon’s literary career in order to explain the central role played by the racialization of American culture in the postmodernist deconstruction of subjectivity and literary authority and in the crisis in white liberal culture. It charts the evolution of both these cultural transformations from Pynchon’s early short stories, composed in the late 1950s, through Gravity’s Rainbow, published in 1973. This book demonstrates that Pynchon deploys techniques associated with the decentering of the linguistic sign and the fragmentation of narrative in order to work through the anxieties of white male subjects in their encounter with racial otherness. It also charts Pynchon’s attention to non-white and non-Euro-American voices and cultural forms, which imply an awareness of and interest in processes of transculturation occurring both within U.S. borders and between the U.S. and the Third World. In these ways, his novels attempt to acknowledge the implicit racism in many elements of white American culture and to grapple with the psychological and sociopolitical effects of that racism on both white and black Americans. The argument of Everybody’s America, however, also considers the limits of Pynchon’s implicit commitment to hybridity as a social ideal, identifying attitudes expressed in his work that suggest a residual attraction to the mainstream liberalism of the fifties and early sixties. Pynchon’s fiction dramatizes the conflict between the discourses and values of such liberalism and those of an emergent multiculturalist ethos that names and valorizes social difference and hybridity. In identifying the competition between residual liberalism and an emergent multiculturalism, Everybody’s America makes its contribution to the broader understanding of postmodern culture.

Review
"Witzling reads texts well, but his special contribution lies in his grasp of contemporary theory and those conundrums of race in which the younger Pynchon's imagination was anchored in the 1950s and 1960s...this is an original contribution to knowledge of Pynchon and the role of race in American culture." Why Empathy Matters: The Science and Psychology of Better Judgment, by J. D. Trout

A road map to empathic and efficient decisions and policies, constructed from new insights in the science of human judgment

Faced with another's suffering, human beings feel sympathy and may even be moved to charity. However, for all our good intentions and vaunted free will, we are lousy at making the bigger decisions that actually improve lives. Why? Drawing on his sweeping and innovative research in the fields of psychology, behavioral economics, and neuroscience, philosopher and cognitive scientist J. D. Trout explains how our empathic wiring actually undermines the best interests of individuals and society. However, it is possible to bridge this "empathy gap" and improve our decision-making. Here, Trout offers a tantalizing proposal- how to vault that gap and improve the lives of not just ourselves but the lives of everyone all around the world.

From Publishers Weekly
In this dramatic challenge to cherished American concepts like individualism, free will and laissez-faire economics, Trout (Epistemology and the Psychology of Human Judgment) presents an alternative story grounded not in the abstractions of political theory or economics, but in the moisture and grit of human psychology. Studies by cognitive scientists and psychologists reveal an empathy gap, where individuals repeatedly make biased and selfish choices despite their best attempts to the contrary. The author posits that government can bridge the gap and cites vaccination, estate tax, helmet laws and food safety as issues that government has successfully handled for the greater good. For fighting poverty: "the best hope... is amending the Constitution to guarantee an above-poverty income to all citizens." Trout recognizes that government may not always make the right choices, but suggests that if it depended more on automated processes and the advice of social scientists, it might recover the trust that it has lost. For some, Trouts book will seem a panacea for a selfish world, but others may question whether it is really possible to prevent the same biases that affect individual decisions from affecting larger, governmental entities. Review
"The Empathy Gap is an important and engaging book, and Trout's ideas are eye-opening and fascinating. Trout explains a large set of new ideas about human rationality, emotion and well-being, and connects them to pressing social and political issues. This is an invaluable enrichment of public discourse, which could lead to new ways of framing our current dilemmas and to new solutions to them."
-Steven Pinker, author of The Blank Slate and The Stuff of Thought

"Trout engagingly identifies the issues facing citizens who worry about others' exploiting their natural imperfections as decision makers, but also worry about relying on paternalistic institutions to protect them. Recognizing that those institutions are similarly flawed, Trout calls fro information sharing, public deliberation, and empirical evaluation of interventions."
-Baruch Fischhoff, Howard Heinz University Professor, Social and Decision Sciences, Carnegie Mellon University, and past president of the Society for Judgement and Decision Making

"J.D. Trout's The Empathy Gap provides insightful answers to explain how good people can look the other way and do so little to respond to massive problems affecting other human beings. He uses the latest findings in behavioral decision research, with his practical understanding of philosophy to outline a better world. We would all be better off if the new administration in Washington read and understood the messages that are outlined in this. In fact, Trout's The Empathy Gap explains so much of what has gone wrong for the last eight years. This work has the power to transform how we think about and act on challenges to improve society."
-Max H. Bazerman, Straus Professor, Harvard Business School, coauthor of Negotiation Genius

a clarification--not a review
By Read-Only
I was confused at the existence of two books by this author on the same topic published very close together. After considerable effort, I found that Why Empathy Matters is the paperback edition of The Empathy Gap, which doesn't seem to be explicitly stated on either Amazon page. The author's online vita explains this.

I just mention this so that readers don't buy the book twice by mistake or waste time (like me) wondering which one was more appropriate for them to read.

(I rated it five stars because Amazon wouldn't allow me to add this note without providing a rating.)

A fun book on decision making and policy
By G.A. Wilson
The first thing I noticed about this book is that - to my pleasant surprise -- it is not at all a self-help book. Instead, it's a book that describes -- in entertaining and highly readable prose -- how we can effect significant improvements in well being by using social policy to make an end run around our most common human foibles.

Here I will briefly summarize each of the six chapters to give a sense of how the book unfolds.

Chapter 1 (Bridging the Empathy Gap) - introduces a theme that runs throughout the book - that empathy can be good, but can also be fickle, and we need social policies to harness its power for the good. I found myself wanting more of a sense cohesiveness to the examples. But they made more sense as I got deeper into the book.

Chapter 2 (The Trappings of Freedom) "Free will is a bit like a sheep. There really is an animal there, but it's amazingly skinny when you've shaved all the wool off." (That's my favorite quote from the book!). The argument here - familiar in social psychology but I'm betting not so in philosophy - is that much of our behavior is shaped by external forces, much more so than we ever recognize - an important premise for the proposals introduced later.

Chapter 3 (Can We Rebuild This Mind?) - here Trout urges that we should develop behavioral policies that impose external constraints to ensure that we do not fall prey to destructive biases that impede good decision making. This chapter provides a really nice summary of different cognitive biases that we are prone to - these are probably familiar to many readers already, but not everyone.

Chapter 4 (Outside the Mind) - what do hospital computer screensavers depicting colorfully germy hands, a urinal with a drawing of a life-sized fly inside, and chevron markings on roads have in common? They are each a man-made feature of the local environment that effectively corrects detrimental tendencies in behavior. This is the most entertaining chapter in the book - the examples are at times hilarious, and all fascinating.

Chapter 5 (Stat Versus Gut) anticipates the concern that behavior-shaping policies will all be expensive and complicated. Trout argues that many welfare-enhancing policies are not only simple but also money saving. This chapter is a great lesson for non-policy-wonks like me who tire of jargon-laden cost-benefit analyses. At the same time, I would have liked to see an acknowledgement that not all solutions will be simple and cheap.

Chapter 6 (The New Republic) is the final chapter, and it presses for the adoption of behavioral science based policy, to increase overall happiness and well-being. These include small scale changes that can produce big changes in the lives of individual people, like the elimination of grocery-free deserts in inner cities, and walk-to-work programs that encourage people to avoid long commutes. Trout calls for "benign social experimentation" - science backed policies that can potentially increase well-being. Some of these are seemingly small tweaks that we might not even notice but could reap huge benefits - things like using linguistics-based evidence to regulate drug names to avoid prescription related errors. But Trout doesn't shy away from more controversial topics, like handgun control, suicide prevention, and helmet laws - I was pleased to see an added layer of complexity here. This is clearly the most ambitious chapter in the book, as well as the most original and the most thought provoking as well.

Overall, the book has provoked me to look at problems that plague us individually and socially in a new light - they no longer seem as daunting and insolvable. Of course, this book is not a panacea, it's just a starting point. But its timing couldn't be better - it unabashedly embraces the notion that the time for real social and political Change has come - what distinguishes this book is that it provides a roadmap for how we can go about it. Highly recommended - there's something for everyone here.

Quit dithering while the world burns
By cassdog
You have biases in your thinking that hold you back from doing what is best for yourself. We are poor at saving money, constantly value our present self over our future selves, make decisions based on arbitrary starting points and we value the status quo for no other reason than 'it is the way things are'. These cognitive biases are a result of our evolutionary heritage, a patchwork of cognitive tools latched on to previous cognitive shortcuts which themselves were imperfect. Not only do these cognitive biases get in the way of thought processes and actions regarding our own lives, they inhabit our very thinking on public policy and social welfare issues. A particularly profound example used in the book is that we have more empathy for those close to us and those similar to us. A politician who if sitting next to a starving child would obviously withhold seconds so the child could eat but once around other wealthy politicians with no starving children around he would thoughtlessly pass a bill that day stripping the dinner off of the plates of millions of children. Additionally, we are notoriously short-sighted and bad at estimating future costs so we are awful at saving for retirement. So a plan like Social Security that forces society to save is an essential remedy to create a stable society where the elderly aren't homeless or hungry. After a tour-de-force of our hardwired sloppy thinking, the author spends most of the book creating prescriptions to get around our inherent weaknesses to create a better life for us all...sometimes against the will of our cognitive biases. The author terms these outside strategies. These are strategies that don't rely on individual changes, or individual willpower to overcome our biases. Instead, outside strategies are policies which give us better options where our cognitive biases won't get in the way. I found this part of the book very fascinating and I would love to read more about adoption of these outside strategies worldwide. The other idea that the author argues for is something that I have been very passionate about for years, something that I have wanted to shout from the rooftops. The author proposes the use of empirical studies on public policies to determine outcomes, based particularly on new findings in social sciences, psychology and behavioral neurology. There truly are right and wrong answers to some of our public policy questions regardless of the two-party system and the point-counterpoint nature of our media. He even suggests that we use the scientific method to experiment on 'relatively safe' public policies and measure the results. Why aren't public policies set up this way? This book is very pragmatic and the author attempts many solutions to these problems which I will leave to the reader. But this was a refreshing and unique look in to public policy debates which have reached a standstill and bogged down our advancement for too long. While we dither over our petty disputes, children starve, the uninsured die and a more perfect union slips away.

From multiple New York Times best selling author David Weber and #1 New York Times best selling author Timothy Zahn. NEW ENTRY IN BEST-SELLING SERIES. Book #2 in the Manticore Ascendant series, set in David Weber's Honorverse.

Lieutenant Travis Long of the Royal Manticoran Navy is the sort of person who likes an orderly universe. One where people follow the rules.

Unfortunately, he lives in the real universe.

The good news is that Travis is one of those rare people who may like rules but has a talent for thinking outside them when everything starts coming apart. That talent has stood him—and the Star Kingdom—in good stead in the past, and it’s one reason he’s now a “mustang,” an ex-enlisted man who’s been given a commission as a King’s officer.

The bad news is that two of the best ways of making enemies ever invented are insisting on enforcing the rules . . . and thinking outside them when other people don’t. Travis learned that lesson the hard way as a young volunteer in basic training, and he knows that if he could just keep his head down, turn a blind eye to violations of the rules, and avoid stepping on senior officers’ toes, he’d do just fine. But the one rule Travis Long absolutely can’t break is the one that says an officer in the Royal Navy does his duty, whatever the consequences.

At the moment, there are powerful forces in the young Star Kingdom of Manticore’s Parliament which don’t think they need him. For that matter, they’re pretty sure they don’t need the Royal Manticoran Navy, either. After all, what does a sleepy little single-system star nation on the outer edge of the explored galaxy need with a navy?

Unhappily for them, the edge of the explored galaxy can be a far more dangerous place than they think it is. They’re about to find out why they need the Navy . . . and how very, very fortunate they are that Travis Long is in it.

Better than the first and as good as the best of Weber's Honorverse novels.
By JLM
An excellent space opera. A good balance between battle action and the political situation inherent in a evolving nation with two differing views as to how the nation should evolve, especially when neither side yet knows what it is about their system they need to protect. It's interesting to see how Weber envisioned Manticore evolving in its early stages in light of what we know it becomes. There is excellent character development across a fair number of characters. And we see that Travis Long finally begins to evolve as an individual.

My only concern is how far away the next installment may be, since Weber has a number of different series going right now and Zahn has his own stories to tell.

I'm totally disappointed!
By J Hoare
Because I've already finished reading this book and it'll be some time before the next in the series. It certainly works for one fan of David Weber's Honorverse but I believe it or preferably the first in this series, A Call To Duty, will also appeal to readers encountering that magnificently drawn universe of the imagination for the first time.

Travis Long is the ultimate pain-in-the-rear rule follower. He lives the rules. But he's also cursed with an imagination that happens to be his saving grace. If you want more, read the books. You won't regret it.

I liked the previous book in the series more
By Amazon Customer
This is another good book by David Weber & Co. Unfortunately I have to say that I liked the first book in the series better. The book is quite slow to start and, what I consider the main character, Travis is really not present at all during a good first chunk of the book. During this part of the book it suffers a bit from the “David Weber Syndrome” were people just go around and talk, discuss and talk some more. The latter third of the book makes up for this with plenty of action but the first parts of the book still drags it down quite a bit.

Most of the book is spent on the build up for the war to come. We are following one of the principal agents in his endeavours to set the stage for a crushing defeat of the Manticoran forces which, due to the usual political short-sightedness as well the equally usual habit of said politicians to work primarily for their own gain, is a abysmally poor state. This is also one of the parts with this book that I do not like very much. A lot of it is spent on frustrating politics and political manoeuvring.

Luckily things do heat up in the third part of the book when the cat is out of the bag and the sh-t hits the fan big-time. Once we get to the fleet action it is as good as can be expected from a book (partly) written by David Weber. These parts were a pleasure to read.

The, not so surprising, outbreak of the hostilities also means that previously mentioned a--holes (aka politicians) got some nice surprises and consequently got slapped around a bit. Unfortunately, and this frustrated me to no end, these a--holes actually do not get it but, during the very end of the book, they immediately starts to plot how they can use the events for their own gain. What was especially pissing me off were the parts where the jerk Winterfall repetedly tries to convince himself that he is working in Manticore’s best interest by continuing to have his head stuck up Breakwater’s a--. Not only that but they manage to screw Travis over…again. Arrrggghhhh!

On the whole it is a good book. As the previous one it is good but not great and I liked the previous one better.

Chronicles of the Investiture Contest: Frutolf of Michelsberg and his continuators (Manchester Medieval Sources MUP)From Manchester Univ

At the very end of the eleventh century, the German monk Frutolf of Michelsberg completed a chronicle that would become one of the most significant historical works of the middle ages. Frutolf's Chronicle offered not only a learned history of the world beginning with the Creation, but an important eyewitness account of the conflict between the German emperors and the papacy known today as the Investiture Contest. Such was his chronicle's significance that it was continued, adapted and copied many times during the twelfth century and beyond.

This book offers the first English translation of large portions of Frutolf's Chronicle and its most important adaptations: an anonymous continuation written in 1106, an imperial chronicle dedicated to Emperor Henry V of Germany in 1114, a version by Abbot Ekkehard of Aura and an anonymous continuation that extends to 1125. The translated texts span the century-and-a-quarter from 1000 to 1125, offering penetrating commentary on the reigns of the four Salian kings of Germany, the development of papal reform, the conflict between empire and papacy, and the early crusading movement. Significantly, these texts present startlingly different perspectives on the history of the period - from Frutolf's pro-imperial account, which emphasizes the divisive influence of Pope Gregory VII on the unity of church and empire, to Ekkehard of Aura's uncompromisingly pro-Gregorian interpretation that casts Emperor Henry IV of Germany in the role of consummate villain.

Frutolf of Michelsberg and his continuators offer to specialists, non-specialists and undergraduates alike a rich and fascinating example of how medieval authors wrote and re-wrote history. Alongside other contemporary texts translated in this series, the book provides a window on the conflict that fundamentally altered the relationship of church and state in Western society.

A riveting, action-packed, post-apocalyptic survival story from a master of SF

When your life is based on lies, how do you hunt down the truth? Jerry Beche should be dead. Instead, he's rescued from a desolate Earth where he was the last man alive. He's then trained for the toughest conditions imaginable and placed with a crack team of specialists on an isolated island. Every one of them is a survivor, as each withstood the violent ending of their own alternate Earth. And their new specialism? To retrieve weapons and data in missions to other apocalyptic versions of our world. But what is "the Authority," the shadowy organization that rescued Beche and his fellow survivors? How does it access timelines to find other Earths? And why does it need these instruments of death? As Jerry struggles to obey his new masters, he begins to distrust his new companions. A strange bunch, their motivations are less than clear, and accidents start plaguing their missions. Jerry suspects the Authority is feeding them lies, and team members are spying on him. As a dangerous situation spirals into catastrophe, is there anybody he can trust?

a bit disappointing (weak four), but I'd be interested in a follow up
By B. Capossere
I was really looking forward to Gary Gibson's Extinction Game, as it combines two of my favorite concepts: parallel universes and post-apocalyptic settings. But while I found it a generally pleasant read, I'd be lying if I didn't admit it was a bit disappointing, perhaps because of those high expectations.

The premise is so great I'm shocked that it hasn't actually been done before. Jerry Beche, one of the few survivors of an extinction-level, planet-wide plague, hasn't seen a person for years., so he is understandably surprised when he finds a set of footprints outside his home. He is even more shocked when the people those prints belong to abduct him and then explain they are from a parallel universe Earth that has also suffered its own extinction event. Even better, they work for a mysterious entity (is there any other kind of entity?) called The Authority, which is overseeing a kind of exploratory salvage mission through a series of post-apocalyptic Earths. Of course, being a "mysterious entity," hints soon crop up that the Authority might not be as benevolent as they want to seem, and and is in fact holding back some crucial information from their "Pathfinders," the group of explorers Jerry becomes a member of. It also turns out that some of what the Authority is hiding might have a more personal connection to Jerry.

In many ways, then, Extinction Game, is less a post-apocalyptic novel than a conspiracy/murder investigation novel. That isn't to say we don't see a decent number of end-of-the-world scenarios, some of which are more original/interesting than others, including an asteroid strike (which actually becomes a tourist event by visitors from the Authority's Earth, a nuclear war, a rogue brown star (one of my favorites), and an engineered virus that left one Earth filled with strange bee-human hybrids (one of the most original and another personal favorite).

The plot is solid, though I'd say large parts are pretty predictable. Gibson makes no bones about the Authority having some ulterior motives, but I wish they'd been a bit more surprising. Jerry's more personal mystery has an underlying premise I liked quite a bit (I'm avoiding spoilers here), but its resolution felt somewhat flat. The novel kept my attention for the most part, but unfortunately its weakest section came toward the end, where it devolved into too much talking, with too much plot being revealed not by action, but by second and even third-hand accounts through dialogue. And worse, dialogue that was more summary than anything else. I'd also say the plot was harmed by one of my personal pet peeves--people just not talking to one another (at one point, I wrote as a note, "Just tell them!").

Gibson does a better job with the characters and their inter-relationships. Jerry especially is sharply formed, starting off with his introduction as a man nearly driven insane by loneliness (he spends a lot of early time talking to his dead wife). His Pathfinder mentor, Nadia, is also a strong character, and I liked his relationship with her quite a bit. I also thought Gibson did a good job presenting a diversity of characters, not just in the usual sense (racial, sexual), but also in the varied responses to the end of the world. On the downside, Jerry does fall a bit too quickly into a romantic relationship for my liking (to be fair, there is an explanation for this), and I wished for a stronger, better defined villain.

The prose style was solid; if it wasn't noticeable for any particular richness or lyricism, than it also didn't distract for worse reasons. And if Extinction Game didn't quite meet my hopes for some wildly inventive and richly detailed apocalypse-Earths, Gibson has left himself open to revisiting this group of people and this universe (s). I'd like to see what he might do with a follow-up.

An unexpectedly low energy affair
By Tghu Verd
I've enjoyed all of Gibson's previous novels but this was a drab effort, lacking pace of plot, interesting characterization or even particularly challenging ideas. Indeed, the challenge I had was finishing it, so dreary was the mid-section of the novel. I was so disengaged that even though it's his "latest" novel, the lack of composure compared to those prior novels made me wonder whether it's an earlier work that has been dusted off and published on the back of his success.

Whether that's the case or not, "Extinction Game" is essentially a POV thriller based on the premise that a shadowy "Authority" plucks the literal 'last man standing' from parallel Earth's that suffered some kind of global disaster and appoints them to a search and rescue team hitting up other apocalyptic Earth's from the apparently infinite multiverse. Add in hints of internecine politics within the Authority, a complete lack of "Why" any of this is happening plus the forced teamwork of a half dozen sole survivors, and Gibson sets the scene for what could be an interesting and complex sci-fi thriller.

Instead, and despite a great opening sequence, it's almost drab. I feel that this stems from Gibson adopting that first-person viewpoint and especially because our protagonist, Jerry Beche, was not particularly engaging or likable for my taste. Gibson keeps him passive for at least half the novel and I find it difficult to really care when the main character fails to deliver much in the way of oomph to situations. By the time his dander is up and he starts punching above his weight, it was too late for me, I was by then merely plodding through to see what the story was about.

Plus, the situations are pretty lackluster. Channeling our viewpoint through Jerry limits the tension. Sure, Jerry can surmise what the others are feeling, but that is not the same as being in their heads. Which was a shame because those hints of politics could have really ratcheted things up if we were privy to them rather than riding along with Jerry. In a similar vein, most of the parallel worlds that Jerry visits are used as the set up for the mystery, rather than triggers for the mystery. It seems a minor point of difference but in terms of plot tension and the inherent mechanics of a mystery thriller, it is a crucial difference and the sad fact is that you could strip out pretty much all of the multiverse day trips and it would not collapse the heart of the story.

Finally, there was the science. Gibson typically skates pretty quickly over the 'how things work' aspect of his universes, but it seemed the ice was particularly thin in "Extinction Game". There are a few explanations later in the novel for some of the aspects of Jerry et al's hops between worlds, but for the most part I was left pondering things large and small. Gibson has written a few novels in a series - think the "The Shoal Sequence - so perhaps he'll continue Jerry's journey in a sequel, but I won't be buying it.

So, for me, this was not a comparable effort to his other work. It's expensive, I found it sadly wooden in execution, and there wasn't really a point that I could find. Two stars and no recommendation that you purchase it, it's certainly not the outcome I expected when it hit my Kindle!

Interesting tale in a new world(s)
By Matt Grafton
I read an exert of this book on Tor.com and was intrigued enough to buy it.

I really liked the set up of the dystopian alternate realities and the Author was able
to play around with them in interesting ways. The characters were somewhat text book
but the main character was interesting and the way his background is revealed is well
paced.
There are a few rather large info dump chapters that I think could have been
handled a little smoother. One chapter that is handled well is a flash back while there
were a couple later on that were just characters spewing exposition at each other.
The plot twists were pretty well handled and although they were not super original
they worked out pretty well.
There are some plot threads left hanging for sequels but it is a complete story. I was
glad to not be left with a cliffhanger ending.
